Sanchez stars as Chile rout Japan 4-0 in Copa America

Alexis Sanchez starred in Chile's Copa America opener as the defending champions started their campaign with an emphatic win over Japan on Monday.

The Manchester United outcast scored one goal and set up another as Reinaldo Rueda's side beat the guest nation 4-0 to go level with Uruguay at the top of Group C.

Veteran striker Eduardo Vargas found the net twice in the second half after Erick Pulgar had put Chile ahead just before the the break in Sao Paolo.

The 2015 and 2016 Copa America champions looked in control against the inexperienced Japan side from the first whistle, with star man Sanchez proving a threat on the left wing.

The 30-year-old, who joined United from Arsenal in 2018, has failed to impress since his arrival at Old Trafford and has drawn significant criticism following a number of ineffective displays. After just five goals and nine assists in 45 appearances for the Red Devils, the club are expected to sell the player this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revamps his squad.

But the winger showed plenty of dangerous moments from the start as he linked well with Jean Beausejour on the left flank.

And he almost opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a low effort which just went wide, before Pulgar opened the scoring five minutes later.

The Bologna midfielder rose highest to head Charles Aranguiz's corner past Keisuke Osako and put the two-time winners ahead at the interval.Chile didn't look back and soon added a second in the 54th minute as Vargas' attempt took a deflection on its way into the net.Japan did have chances of their own but were unable to convert before Sanchez's diving header put the result beyond doubt with just eight minutes remaining.

It was the United man's first goal in five months and he turned provider a minute later when he played Vargas through on goal, with striker finishing the move with a classy chip.

Chile face Ecuador in their next match, while Japan will look to recover against Uruguay. The Mirror.
