Bangla Academy to recall Momtazuddin Ahmed

Recalling the memory of eminent playwright and theatre personality Professor Momtazuddin Ahmed, who died in the first week of this month, Bangla Academy, in association with Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, is organising a commemorative meeting today at the Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad auditorium of Bangla Academy in Shahbag of the capital.

National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman will preside over the event, where eminent personalities of the country will take part.

Born in January 18, 1935 in Chapainawabganj, Momtazuddin Ahmed completed master’s in Bengali literature.

He was a professor in the department of Bengali at Jagannath University and a part-time lecturer at the department of Music and Dramatics at Dhaka University.  He taught Bengali, Sanskrit, and European drama in several non-government and government colleges for over 32 years.

Ahmed’s career as a teacher, writer as well as an actor earned him wide recognition, but theatre is the most prolific part of his career. As a man of progressive conviction Ahmed took an active role in state language movement of Bangladesh, struggle for freedom during Pakistani era and movement for getting back democracy in post-independence Bangladesh.

Ahmed wrote 25 plays for stage, radio and television and directed several of them.

Most of his directions and writings were for his theatre troupe, Theatre (Natok Shoroni). Apart from plays, he wrote several novels, research papers, essays, newspaper columns, screenplays for cinema, textbooks for primary and secondary educations of Bangladesh.

Ahmed was a director of the Department of Research and Publications at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 2011.

Momtazuddin Ahmed received the Bangla Academy Award in 1976, Ekushey Padak in 1997 and, Shishu Academy Award. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy honoured him as one of the outstanding playwrights in Bangladesh in 2008.
