For the first time in the history of the country, an international theatre festival is going to be hosted by the government. Organised by Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the weeklong event titled ‘Bangladesh International Theatre Festival’ will take place from June 20 to 26 on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

Aiming to promote and expand the theatrical productions worldwide, Cultural Ministry, in association with BSA and International Theatre Unit, is organising the festival.

The event is supported by Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation.

Two Bangladeshi troupes, Dhriti Nartanalay and Anwesha Theatre, will participate in the festival. Dhriti Nartanalay will stage its dance-drama ‘Mayar Khela’ on the opening day, while Anwesha Theatre will stage its production ‘Joytun Bibir Pala’ on the third day.

Besides, six other troupes from Russia, China, France, India, Vietnam and Nepal will stage their plays during the weeklong festival.

The inaugural ceremony of the weeklong festival will be held tomorrow at the National Theatre Hall of BSA, where Planning Minister MA Mannan is scheduled to be present as special guest. Presided over by secretary of Cultural Affairs Ministry Dr Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, state minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid will inaugurate the festival.

The mass audiences can enjoy the festival through an online registration, which is free of cost. For registration, the audience have to visit www.internationaltheatrefestbd.com.

The festival will also feature a seminar on the third day of the weeklong event.

A press conference was held in the seminar room of BSA yesterday to disclose the detailed information about the festival. State minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid, BSA director general Liaquat Ali Lucky, president of ITI Bangladesh Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu and noted theatre personality Ramendu Majumdar, among others, were present at the press meet.
