Judiciary’s independence proved yet again: Quader

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader claimed yesterday that the judiciary was completely independent of the government. The Sheikh Hasina-led government does not interfere in the affairs of the court, he added.

“It has been proved again that the AL-led government doesn't interfere in the affairs of the court.

The judiciary works independently,” he said, referring to a six-month bail given to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Earlier, the High Court (HC) on Tuesday granted six months’ bail to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia in two defamation cases. Talking to the media yesterday, Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said BNP leaders always blamed the government for Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment, even though it had little to do with her custody.

He also alleged that BNP leaders and workers had not been able to anything to free their party chief. Meanwhile, BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed told the media that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia would be freed from jail through legal means.

She has been in prison since February 8 last year after being convicted in a graft case. “We will free our leader from jail legally and not through any compromise,” he said.
