5th phase UZ polls held peacefully

Awami League's Rina Parvin and MA Rashid were elected chairmen from Gazipur Sadar and Bandar upazila respectively in the fifth phase upazila election which was held by and large peacefully barring some stray incidents at 20 upazilas yesterday.

Results of the upazilas came in include Gazipur Sadar, Bandar of Narayanganj, Nakla in Sherpur and Taltali in Barguna till filing the report.

UNB adds: Rina bagged 23,865 votes while her nearest rival got 3,807 votes, unofficial results from 50 poll centres showed.

The upazila has 1,17, 485 voters. Voting took place between 9am and 5pm using EVMs.

In Bandar upazila, Awami League-backed Rashid was elected unopposed while Sanaullah Sanu and Salima Hossain Shanta were elected vice-chairmen, according to unofficial results.

There are 1,14, 553 voters in the upazila.

The local administration said about 20 percent voters exercised their franchise.

Meanwhile, in Nakla upazila, independent candidate Borhan Uddin won the chairman's post defeating the ruling Awami League candidate Shafiqul Islam.

Borhan bagged 29,839 votes while Islam got 24,883 votes.

Returning Officer and District Election Officer Shukur Mahmud Mia declared the result after counting votes. The election was held at 67 voting centres without any unwanted incident.

In Taltali upazila, Awami League's Rezbul Karim was elected chairman defeating renegade candidate Montu.

Karim bagged 28,514 votes while Montu got 10,696.

The upazilas, where elections were held, include Naldanga in

Natore, Kamarkhand in Sirajganj, Sundarganj in Gaibandha, Rangabali in Patuakhali, Madaripur sadar, Kalukhali in Rajbari, Shayestaganj in Habiganj, Bancharampur and Bijoynagar in Brahmanbaria, Poba in Rajshahi, Purbadhal in Netrakona, Jamalpur in Sunamganj, Kotiadi in Kishoreganj, Mathbaria in Pirojpur, Chhagalnaiya in Feni and Dumuria in Khulna.

However, the election to the chairman post at Noakhali sadar upazila was not held as the chairman aspirant has been elected unopposed. However, the elections to vice-chairman and vice-chairman for women posts were held yesterday.

Bringing allegations of vote rigging in Kalukhali upazila of Rajbari, Awami League-nominated chairman candidate Kazi Saiful Islam demanded cancellation of voting there.  

In Gazipur sadar upazila, an independent candidate boycotted the election bringing allegations of widespread rigging during the voting. Besides, at least five people were injured while chase and courter chase took place between two chairman candidates during voting hours in Kamarkhanda upazila in Sirajganj.

In Feni, police so far arrested 8-10 people while trying to snatch ballot boxes and cast fake votes at different polling centres.
