The ongoing Jamuna river protection project has raised hopes among the erosion-affected people of Tangail Sadar, Kalihati, Bhuapur and Goplapur Upazila. People of the areas are hoping that their homesteads and croplands will not be washed by the mighty river Jamuna anymore.

A Tangail Water Development Board source said a mammoth project costing Tk 482.13 cr had been take up to protect the left bank of the mighty river Jamuna on the Tangail side.

The WDB has undertaken two projects to prevent the chronic erosion caused by the Jamuna and maintain the river’s flow.

Tk 281.87 crore has been allocated for the Bhurua-Battala project and Tk 200.56 crore for the Aurjuna Project.

About 51 per cent of the allocated funds will be spent for the dredging of the river and 49 per cent to build the protective embankment.

The 3-km-long protective embankment of the Bhurua-Bottalaproject is being executed by 12 groups and 12 contractor and work is said to be progressing in full-swing. The 3.75-km-long protection embankment of the Aurjuna project has been taken up by 14 groups and 12 contactors. Here, too, the work is said to be progressing fast.

It has been learnt that the groups have been working from the 2017-18 fiscal year. About 45 per cent of the work has been completed.

A spot survey revealed that Tekbai International, a construction company, is building the CC block next to the river in Bhuapur Upazila. The quality of these CC blocks is being tested by BUET engineers.

Site manager of the company Md. FerdousJahan said that the standard of the CC blocks was first being tested by the experts from BUET and only then were they cleared for use by the project engineer. Such quality control had not been done before, he added.

Local residents Nasir Khan, Jomir Bepari, Najim and Uddin Talukder said they were hopeful about the project. They said that, earlier, the WDB used to only dump sand bags. But they were washed away by the currents in no time. Moreover, they complained that the WDB used to choose the rainy season for the project work. But now work was being done as per the demands of the people.

Many people of the area have become homeless and landless because of the erosion cause by the Jamuna. The local people feel if the river protection embankment is built and the river is properly dredged, the villagers would be safe during the rainy season.

Md Golam Sorower, SDE, Tangail WDB, said 24 contractors of the two projects had set up CC blocks for protection of the river embankment along a 6.75-km stretch. The work of river dredging by 13 contractors had been completed. The rest would be finished soon. All the projects would be completed by the 2019-20 fiscal year, he added.

Md Sirajul Islam, executive engineer, Tangail WDB, said that the quality of the work was being emphasised. He added that the project would be completed in time.

Younus Islam Talukder, chairman of the Goplapur Upazila Parisad, said permanent protection of the river embankment was a demand of the erosion-hit people of the area. Their dream would now come true.

He thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for allocating big sums for the projects.
