Awami League (AL) general secretary Oabidul Quader has claimed that the hartal called by the Left parties yesterday was not successful as the people did not respond to the strike. He was talking to reporters at a press conference at AL president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office yesterday.

“The people did their daily work without facing any sufferings.

The hartal has not been successful. I think no demand will be met by enforcing a hartal as it's not a political weapon now,” said Quader.

Earlier, Left parties had called an eight-hour-long general strike across the country on Sunday to protest against the government’s decision to hike gas prices. Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said the decision to hike the gas price was rational.

Replying to another question over BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment, the AL general secretary said the court is completely independent and the government does not interfere in its affairs. "Whenever any verdict goes against BNP leaders, they reject it and say that the government is interfering," he added.

Referring to the BNP’s movement, Quader said the BNP’s threat to wage a tough movement against the government is just big talk. BNP leaders and workers would not be able to take to the streets even for 10 minutes to free their chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is currently in jail, he added.

Replying to another question over issuing showcause notices against the party’s rebel leaders, Quader said those who worked against the party during the recently held local government elections will have to face the music. “We will take a final decision in this regard in our party’s upcoming central working committee meeting,” he added.

He also said those lawmakers and ministers who worked in favour of rebel candidates by violating the party decision during the local body polls would not get nomination in future.

Replying to a question, Quader said the AL's national conference will be held in due time as “we have necessary preparations for it.”  "The party may launch its membership collection drive from July 21. The key target of the campaign is to include persons who believe in the spirit of Liberation War, who were not involved in wrongdoings, and those who worked for the party in the previous elections," he added.

AL joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Dr Dipu Moni, Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, organising secretaries Ahmed Hossain, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, information and research secretary Afjal Hossain, science and technology affairs secretary Abdus Sabur, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, forest and environment secretary Delwar Hossain and central working committee member Marufa Akhter Popy were present at the press conference.
