PM to inaugurate ePassport distribution this month

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the distribution of electronic passports or ePassports this month, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Thursday.

He disclosed the information while exchanging views with the newly-elected committee of Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the secretariat on Thursday, reports UNB.

BSRF President Tapan Biswas and General Secretary Shamim Ahmed among others present.

The ePassport has an embedded electronic microprocessor chip containing biometric information used to authenticate the identity of the bearer.

"We've already issued 26 million machine readable passports. We're working with a renowned German company to produce ePassports.

We've already finished relevant work to launch ePassports," the Minister said.

"Its distribution will be inaugurated in July if the Prime Minister gives time," he added.

When asked about allegations raised against Additional DIG of Police Gazi Mozammel Haq he said that Gazi forcibly registered land from a person. The police officer will be brought to book if he is found guilty, the home Minister added.

Replying to another query, the Minister said the trial of many incidents could not be completed due to backlog of cases.

When asked about the solution of the huge number of rape incidents, the Minister said: "Such immoral incidents have been occurring since the inception of the society. There have also been social preventions. Such incidents are taking place across the world," he said.

He urged everyone to come forward to help stop this menace.

Criminals are being arrested but rape and killings will come down if awareness is raised, he said.
