Golam Kibria, a critically injured traffic police sergeant, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday morning. He suffered serious injuries while trying to stop a speeding covered van on the Barishal-Kuakata highway near Barishal University on Monday afternoon.

He had been rushed to Dhaka by air yesterday evening. The policeman was identified as Golam Kibria, a traffic sergeant of the Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP). He was on duty near the Barishal University and Khoyrabad Bridge area on of the highway.

Dr Baqir Hossain, director of Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said the critically injured victim was sent to Dhaka for better treatment by an air ambulance at 5:30 pm yesterday. The sergeant had suffered multiple injuries in his hip and legs. BMP deputy commissioner (headquarers) Habibur Rahman Khan said the police sergeant was performing his duty near Barishal University under Barishal Bandar police station. Around 12:15pm on Monday afternoon, he signalled a speeding covered van of the Jamuna Group to stop, but it fled, ignoring the traffic signal.

The police sergeant chased the van on his motorcycle and tried to stop the vehicle. But the van hit the policeman’s motorcycle and tried to flee the scene.

Abudul Malek, duty officer of Barishal Bandar police station, said the covered van was later detained and its driver, Abdul Jalil Shikdar, was arrested from the Nalcity area of Jhalakathi district.

Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station under the BMP, said Kibria was rescued with the help of locals and highway police. He was admitted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).
