Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said the future of the Jatiya Party (JP-Ershad) will depend upon the political steps taken by its new leadership. “I heard that the JP will be run by a joint leadership. I always tell one thing that those who can take the right decision at the right time in politics will survive in the long run,” Quader told the media at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.

“However, it is completely the JP’s internal matter on how they will run their party,” he added. Asked about giving posthumous state honour to autocratic ruler HM Ershad, the AL leader countered that the JP had won a number of seats in the December 30 general election and emerged as the main opposition party in Parliament.

“HM Ershad was an elected representative in Parliament and his party is still playing the opposition’s role in the House. Then, how can we describe him (Ershad) as an autocratic ruler?” he said.

Quader criticised the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman for his recent remark that “if government officials commit any mistake in good faith, it will not be considered as crime”.

“It is not clear to me what he (ACC chief) meant by mistake committed in good faith,” the AL leader said.

“Corruption is corruption and the government will consider it accordingly,” he added.

On Thursday, following the last session of DCs' conference at the Secretariat, ACC chairman Iqbal Mahmud had told the

media that if any government official committed any major mistake driven by “good faith”, it will not be considered as crime. Quader also rejected the BNP’s allegation that the government was hindering that party from carrying out its organisational activities. “It is nothing but a fictitious statement,” he said.

About the government’s relief work for the flood victims, Quader said: “Our party’s relief-work teams have been standing by those affected by floods. The government too is dealing with the issue sincerely.”

Among others, AL office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, its organising secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and deputy office secretary Biplab Barua were also present at the press conference.
