‘Nat’l security cell’ under PMO soon

‘Nat’l security cell’ under PMO soon

For the first time, the government is going to appoint a chief executive officer (CEO) to implement the decision of the National Committee on Security Affairs (NCSA), government sources have said. The CEO will work under the National Security Affairs Cell, which will be formed under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) soon, the sources added.

To run the cell, an office will be rented near the PMO, they informed.

In the first phase, seven people will be appointed to assist the cell’s CEO. Already, the cabinet division and the ministry of home affairs have begun the process of recruiting the CEO, a high official of the home ministry said. The official hinted that a senior police officer, who is to retire soon, is likely to be appointed the cell’s CEO.

The official said that the National Security Affairs Cell was being formed as per the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Talking to this correspondent, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said an office of the proposed security cell will be rented near the PMO and a CEO will be appointed soon.

“The main task of the CEO is to implement the decisions taken in meetings of the National Committee on Security Affairs,” he said.

A high official of the cabinet division told this correspondent on condition of anonymity that the cabinet division would provide administrative support to the CEO of the proposed cell.

“As far as I know, the CEO of the cell is likely to be co-opted into the high-powered committee,” she said.

After coming to the power, the government formed a 27-member high-powered National Committee on Security Affairs, led by the Prime Minister.

“The committee is to review the activities and problems relating to state security and defence affairs,” according to the gazette notification issued by the cabinet division on March 27 this year.

The committee will also direct the authorities concerned to take steps on state security and prepare recommendations for the cabinet

if needed, the notification says. Fifty-two days after issuing the notification, the cabinet division reviewed the committee strength and raised it to 29 members from 27 that included the security adviser to the Prime Minister and the director general of the Bangladesh Coast Guard on May 19 this year.
