‘Leadership tussle’ in Jatiya Party intensifies

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka
‘Leadership tussle’ in Jatiya Party intensifies

The death of Jatiya Party (JP) founder HM Ershad on July 14 has resulted in a cold war between Ershad’s wife, Raushan, and his younger brother, GM Quader, over the party leadership, sources said. In an organisational instruction, Ershad, on May 5, had announced that Quader, co-chairman of the party, would discharge the responsibilities of party chairman in his absence.

But Raushan has refused to accept her husband’s written orde. She has said the presidium members should decide the issue. Senior leaders of the party are fearing a split in the JP over the chairman’s post.

Most leaders and activists of the party are with Raushan, a source said, adding that 17 lawmakers, out of a total of 22, have also sided with her. Besides, 30 presidium members, out of 52, have extended support to Raushan for the chairman’s post.

However, Quader claimed that there was no division inside the party over leadership. “We are united. There is no conflict among the leaders. A vested quarter is spreading such rumours. We are working to make the party stronger,” he said in reply to a query.

Meanwhile, several JP leaders are preparing to contest the Rangpur-3 parliamentary seat as the poll is likely to be held by October 13 this year. But the Election Commission (EC) has not yet declared the schedule for the by-election to Rangpur-3, the parliamentary seat of former JP chairman HM Ershad.

At least six leaders and Ershad’s family members want to contest the poll.

After Ershad’s death, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad declared the seat vacant on July 16. She sent a letter was sent to the EC for taking further steps to fill up the vacancy by holding

election. As per rules, the EC must hold the by-election to a vacant seat within 90 days of declaring the seat vacant after the death, or resignation, or removal of a parliament member (MP).

Following the provisions, the EC will have to hold the by-election within October 13 this year. Although the commission has not declared the poll schedule, it is taking steps to hold the by-poll within October 10.

EC sources said the by-election might be held on October 1 or 3.

To select the party candidate for the constituency, the JP on Saturday formed an eight-member parliamentary board comprising its present chairman GM Quader and secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga.

Other members of the board are presidium members Kazi Firoz Rashid, Golam Kibria Tiup, Sheikh Sirajul Islam, Mamdudul Islam Chowdhury, Shamim Haider Patwary and Masud Uddin Chowdhury.

According to party sources, all the board members are loyalists of Quader. None of the followers of Raushan have been given a place in the board. As a result, there is no chance of Raushan’s followers getting party tickets.

According to party leaders, Ershad’s expatriate younger brother, Dr HM Murshed, nephew of former MP Asif Shahriar, niece and former MP Merina Rahman’s daughter Mehejabunnesa Rahman Tupma are also trying to get party tickets for the seat.

Also, the name of Raushan and Ershad’s son, Shad Ershad, is doing the rounds. Raushan and her followers have been trying to ensure a ticket for Shad.

Presidium member and billionaire SM Fakhruzzaman and Rangpur city JP general secretary SM Yasir are also trying to get party tickets. Locals are giving partial support to the two leaders.

In such a situation, top leaders of JP are confused about choosing their candidate for the seat.

A final decision can only be taken in the party’s top forum after primary selection in the party’s nomination board.

When contacted, JP secretary general Mashiur Rahman Ranga told this correspondent that the issue had not yet been discussed in the party forum.

Local leaders will be requested to send four names for nominations. Following the selection, the party’s presidium will finalise the candidate, he said.
