New leadership in BCL likely

The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), students’ wing of the Awami League (AL), is likely to get new people at the helm soon, as the organisational chief, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is deeply annoyed with its top leadership. Party insiders say the AL president, Sheikh Hasina, has issued directives for dissolution of the current BCL committee after expressing her dissatisfaction over the role of organisation president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani.

According to party insiders, Sheikh Hasina has instructed party central leaders to dissolve the committee at the party’s parliamentary board meeting at her official residence on Saturday.

Several central leaders, who requested not to be named, confirmed the news yesterday. They said Hasina had expressed her annoyance with the BCL president and general secretary for their names cropping up in various allegations such as announcing pocket committees in exchange of money, misuse of power, inducting controversial faces in the BCL central committee, misbehaving with the party’s central leaders, among others.

The prime minister had earlier resigned as BCL organisational chief over similar issues. However, she later agreed to retain the position of the student organisation.

At Saturday’s board meeting, AL advisory council member Tofail Ahmed had also expressed his annoyance with the BCL leaders for their involvement in controversial activities.

Most of the central leaders, including party general secretary Obaidul Quader, were present at the board meeting, but they kept their mum, according to meeting sources.

They also said although the BCL president and general secretary were present at Gono Bhaban and wanted to meet with the organisational chief, they failed to reach her.

When contacted over the matter, BCL General Secretary Golam Rabbani told this correspondent that the chief (Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) has high expectations from the BCL and because of the same reason, she is now very displeased.

“We have made mistakes and want to amend those. We will strictly follow Apa’s (Sheikh Hasina) instructions from now on,” he said.

On Thursday, BCL President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon breached the security of Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport as he entered the airport illegally with hundreds of followers.

Hundreds of BCL leaders and supporters gathered at the airport and some of them even entered the plane to say goodbye to Shovon, who was returning to Dhaka by a private airlines after his four-day visit to Sylhet.

Meanwhile, talking over the issue, the AL general secretary Quader yesterday said no decision had been taken yet on dissolving the BCL central committee. “As the party general secretary, it won’t be proper for me to comment on this until it goes into the process of implementation. All of this may be an outburst from the dissatisfaction with the top leadership, but no decision has been taken yet,” he added.

“I am not aware of any such decision. Nothing has been decided yet,” he said replying to a question.

Answering to another query about whether he is happy with the present committee’s activities, he said: “I appreciate the activities which are worth appreciating. The activities which are not liked by others, I won’t like them too. I often ask them to make headlines with positive news.”

Just a few months ago, the BCL top leadership had to face criticism for inducting controversial faces in its central committee and party president Sheikh Hasina had instructed to probe allegations against the ‘controversial’ leaders.

After the directive from the party chief, the BCL higher-ups were forced to drop those controversial faces from the BCL central committee.

On July 31 last year, the AL chief had nominated Shovon as BCL president and Rabbani as general secretary. On May 13, the BCL announced its 301-member full-fledged central committee, triggering controversy and demonstrations by some of those who couldn’t make it to the new committee.
