Jatiya Party ‘averts’ split

GM Quader to remain as party chief, Raushan opposition leader in JS
Jatiya Party ‘averts’ split

Jatiya Party (JP) has apparently averted a split with the two feuding factions reaching a consensus on accepting GM Quader as the party chairman and Raushan Ershad as the leader of opposition in parliament. Amid a conflict over the post of party chairman and leader of opposition in parliament, leaders loyal to both GM Quader and Raushan had a meeting at a Baridhara Club Saturday night and took some decisions to avoid the split.

JP Secretary General Moshiur Rahman Ranga disclosed the decision at a press briefing at the party chairman’s Banani political office yesterday. No follower of Raushan was, however, present at the briefing. Jatiya Party Parliamentary Party (JPPP), meanwhile, held a meeting at Sanshad Bhaban yesterday, where party lawmakers elected Raushan as the leader of opposition in parliament, but no decision was taken regarding the deputy leader of opposition.

“Over 20 lawmakers attended the JPPP meeting. But our lawmakers are yet to take any decision on the appointment of the opposition deputy leader. We have already sent a letter to the Speaker for appointment of Raushan Ershad as opposition leader,” Ranga said. At the meeting on Saturday night, the participating leaders also agreed to nominate Saad Ershad, son of HM Ershad, in the by-election to the Rangpur-3 constituency, which fell vacant after Ershad passed away on July 14.

Ranga said the party’s national council would be held on November 30 in keeping with the announcement of party chief GM Quader. “The party is now united and there's no division. The problems over the post of party chairman have been resolved,” he added.

“I have seen many ups and downs in the party. Many veteran leaders earlier left the JP to join the Awami League or BNP. The party was saved from a major split following last night's meeting,” he said.

When asked about action against some party leaders for violating party discipline and rules, Ranga said: “No such action will be taken against Anisul Islam Mahmud and Fakhrul Imam.”

He further said their meeting also discussed the possible party candidate for the Rangpur-3 by-polls. The party chairman and secretary general have been given responsibilities to finalise the candidate for that constituency, he added.

Though Ershad’s son, Saad, has unofficially been declared as the JP candidate for the Rangpur-3 by-election, his candidature is likely be announced formally by today or tomorrow.

The JP leader said there were some leaders in every party who wanted to catch fish in troubled waters and create divisions to serve their personal agenda.

When asked about his hideout in the last few days, Ranga replied: “Children feel embarrassed when their parents quarrel. As an elder brother in the party, I was just trying to resolve the problems in the last three days.”

The trouble erupted after GM Quader wrote to the Speaker on Tuesday for officially recognising him as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and JP senior co-cahirperson Raushan Ershad on the following day wrote to the Speaker not to accept Quader letter.  In her letter sent to Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Raushan said GM Quader had sent his letter without any decision in the party forum and the JPPP meeting.

On Thursday, a faction of JP leaders had announced HM Ershad’s widow, Raushan Ershad, party chairperson, putting the party on the verge of a split. They had also claimed that GM Quader was announced JP chairman in violation of the party constitution.

In a counter-press conference, GM Quader warned of taking action in line with the party constitution against those party leaders who announced Raushan Ershad as party chairperson.

On July 18, party secretary general Moshiur Rahman Ranga formally announced HM Ershad’s younger brother, GM Quader, as JP chairman at a press conference.

Before his death, Ranga said, Ershad through an organisational instruction had announced that GM Quader would be the party chairman in his absence. Four days later, Raushan in a statement said GM Quader could not be declared the chairman of the party without any decision in the party forum. The followers of Raushan—presidium members Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Fakhrul Imam, SM Foisal Chisty and Selim Osman—along with Quader’s followers—Kazi Firoz Rashid, Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, Syed Abu Hossain Babla and Lt Gen (Retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury—attended Saturday’s meeting.
