BNP to intensify movement for Khaleda release

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD, Dhaka
BNP to intensify movement for Khaleda release

The BNP will hold a number of street demonstration programmes this month to boost its movement to free party chairperson Khaleda Zia, according to party sources. The programmes will include forming human chains in the city and across the country on Wednesday and Thursday, and resuming public meetings at the party's divisional headquarters later this month, the sources said.

As part of its two-day programme, the BNP will hold a human chain demonstration in Dhaka on Wednesday and across the country on Thursday to strengthen its movement to free the former premier who has been serving a 17-year jail term in two graft cases.

Party sources said the new programme would be announced from the human chain demonstration and front organisations would follow them until the release of Khaleda Zia. The BNP will also continue its scheduled programme to hold public meetings at divisional headquarters to demand the release of the party chairperson.

The BNP wants to resume holding public meetings from Sylhet on September 21. Later, the party will hold a public meeting in Mymensingh on September 26 and in Rajshahi on September 29. It will also hold public meetings in other divisional headquarters, including Rangpur.

The party has already started holding public meetings at divisional headquarters on June 18 from Barishal and on June

20 from Chattagram. But it postponed its rally in Rajshahi due to floods.

BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the presence of people in the party’s founding anniversary programme in the city on September 2 proved that they would get similar response in their public meetings in other divisional headquarters.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded that Khaleda Zia be freed immediately or be released on bail which she deserves. He warned that the current government would have to take the responsibility if the health condition of the former premier deteriorates.

The BNP chairperson was sent to jail on February 8 last year following a special court verdict in the Zia Orphanage Graft case sentencing her to a five-year term. Later, the High Court enhanced her jail term to 10 years while she was sentenced to another se ven-year term in a separate case.

Khaleda was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in April this year after she fell ill. She is still undergoing treatment at Cabin Block of the BSMMU.
