For a number of reasons, non-vegetarianism is frowned upon, with vegetarianism, and more recently veganism, being the more preferred choice. Meat and animal products have often been subjected to disdain and negative views.

People might avoid non-vegetarian food for a number of reasons like not wanting to consume food obtained by harming animals, being put off by the smell, not liking the chewiness of meat, or because their religion doesn’t allow it. Another important reason people choose to ditch meat is because of its many health implications.

The consumption of meat is linked with a number of health concerns like diabetes, high cholesterol, and even cancer. But one of the most alarming implications of meat consumption is heart disease. Heart disease is one of the largest health problems in the world, and is one of leading causes of death in the world. Most heart diseases are diet related, and those with a diet high in animal products are more susceptible to cardiovascular issues.

The link between meat and other animal products has been drawn from the fact that these food products are high in cholesterol and saturated fats. Plants on the other hand contain no cholesterol, and only a handful of plant based foods are high in saturated fats, such as coconut oil and cocoa butter. Coming back to meat, cholesterol and saturated fats build up inside the walls of the arteries as plaque, impeding the transport of blood to all areas of the body. When blood is not able to reach parts of the body adequately, bodily functions are impaired, making room for a number of diseases, most notably heart disease.

However, you can enjoy the taste of meat and animal products without having to suffer dire consequences. Firstly, consume these foods in moderation. Include meat in your diet, but be sure to follow the dietary guidelines that come with meat consumption. Eating meat in moderation has shown to show no negative effects on the body. Secondly, make sure you include an abundance of vegan foods in your diet. Foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains have been shown to reduce, and even reverse heart disease.
