Soumya axed, three uncapped players called in Tigers squad

Soumya axed, three uncapped
players called in Tigers squad

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday axed top-order batsman Soumya Sarkar and called in three uncapped players in a further shuffle of its squad for the ongoing tri-nation Twenty20 international at home.

Batsmen Mohammad Naim Sheikh , Aminul Islam and Nazmul Hossain will join the squad for the third and fourth match of the tournament after Bangladesh’s senior players failed to deliver in the first two matches.

Making a massive reshuffle to the previous squad, the BCB declared the 15-man squad  for the second phase, slated to be played in Chattogram against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan on September 18 and 21 respectively.

The BCB made a surprising decision adding two new faces Aminul Islam Biplob and Mohammad Naim Sheikh to the squad while Nazmul Hossain Shanto, yet to be capped in T20 has also been picked-up along with Shafiul Islam and Rubel Hossain.

Left-handed batsman Soumya Sarkar, who continued his poor run with the bat scoring just 4 and 0 respectively in the first two matches, has been dropped from the squad. Except Soumya, uncapped pacer Yasin Arafat Mishu, off-spinner Mahedi Hasan and Abu Haider Rony, recalled to the line-up after 1st T20 against Zimbabwe, has also been left out.

Mohammad Naim Shiekh smashed an outstanding 126 against Afghanistan ‘A’ in the fifth unofficial ODI at BKSP in July this year and helped Bangladesh ‘A’ level series 2-2.

The 20-year-old left-handed batsman also scored 807 runs in 16 games while playing for Legends of Rupganj and also became the second highest run-getter in the tournament.

Aminul Biplob played for High Performance team mainly as leg spinner against Sri Lanka HP team’s tour of Bangladesh in the previous month where he bagged three wickets in the three unofficial ODIs. On the other side, Shafiul Islam played his last T20I against South Africa back in 2017, while Rubel featured in his last T20I when Bangladesh toured of West Indies last year.

Regarding the big changes to the squad, BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu said that, ‘‘our head coach (Russell Domingo) wants few more cricketers to the international side and this is why such massive changes had been made. Since, we’ve World Cup T20 ahead of us, we want to give opportunities to some of the new players to see their temperament,’’ Nannu also added.

Talking about Aminul Islam’s selection Nannu said, ‘‘our coach feels the importance of a leg-spinner too in the squad. We also want a wrist spinner badly. So, we’ve added Biplob for the remaining two T20Is to see how he gets going. His inclusion is a part of a continuous process keeping T20 World Cup in mind,’’ he further explained.

In case of  Abu Haider , Yeasin Arafat and Mahedi Hasan’s exclusion from the squad Nannu told, ‘‘they had been omitted from the squad because the trio will fly for India today with the HP team,’’ he concluded.

Bangladesh squad for second phase: Shakib Al Hasan (C), Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mahmudullah, Sabbir Rahman, Mosaddek Hossain, Liton Das, Afif Hossain, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Mohammad Saifuddin, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Mohammad Naim Sheikh, Aminul Islam Biplob and Najmul Hossain Shanto.
