AL quits Rangpur-3 poll race in favour of JP

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
AL quits Rangpur-3 poll race in favour of JP

The ruling Awami League has moved to quit race for by-election to Rangpur-3 constituency, which fell vacant after HM Ershad’s death, in favour of its election alliance partner Jatiya Party, now the main opposition in Parliament.

AL candidate Rezaul Karim Razu yesterday withdrew his candidature from by-polls to the Rangpur-3 seat. Razu, general secretary of the Rangpur district wing of Awami League, pulled out on the last day of nomination withdrawal, said Returning Officer Shahtab Uddin.

The local Awami League leader submitted an application to the returning officer for withdrawal of his candidature. The by-election to the parliamentary constituency is scheduled to be held on

October 5. Earlier, JP chairman GM Quader had told the media that they were negotiating with its election ally ruling Awami League to clear the way for JP candidate to contest the Rangpur-3 by-election.

Mentionable, Jatiya Party has been holding the Rangpur-3 seat since 1986 with its founding chairman Ershad winning in the last two elections in 2014 and 2018. The Awami League did not nominate any candidate to contest the seat in either of those two elections.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission on Wednesday last declared the names of seven valid candidates for contesting the by-polls.

Now there are only six candidates in the race of the by-polls.
