A Dhaka court yesterday granted a seven-day remand for Juba League Dhaka South Organising Secretary Khalid Mahmud Bhuiyan in connection with four cases filed against him under the money laundering, narcotics, firearms acts and setting up a torture cell in the capital.

Earlier police sought a 14-day remand but the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka granted seven days remand – four days under the fire arms act and three days in narcotics case.

Khalid has been charged in four cases under the money laundering, narcotics, firearms acts and for setting up torture cell, officials from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said.

Three cases were filed against him at Gulshan police station yesterday while another case was filed with Motijheel police station, said RAB assistant director (media and legal wing) Mizanur Rahman.

Khalid was handed over to Gulshan police station yesterday for legal procedures.

Khalid, who is also president of the Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club, was arrested on Wednesday evening from his Gulshan residence for running an illegal casino at the football club.

The same day, RAB raided at least five clubs in the city and detained as well as sentenced 182 people in connection with

running illegal casinos, gambling, and drug abuse. The elite force sealed off at least two clubs.

RAB personnel also seized blackjack tables, slot machines, Tk 24.29 lakh in cash, yaba pills, and bottles of liquor during their drive.

Director (legal and media) of the RAB headquarters, Lt Col Sarwar-Bin-Kashem, told the media yesterday that Khalid was handed over to Gulshan police station after a primary interrogation.

He said the authorities gathered important information about the ‘casino business in the city’ by interrogating Khalid.

Meanwhile, RAB-3 received information about a ‘torture cell’ in the capital run by Khalid. The torture cell was located at Eastern Kamlapur Tower in the city.  Businessmen and professionals who refused to pay extortion money to Bhuiyan’s men were brutally tortured in this torture cell, RAB sources said.

RAB personnel also found various torture devices in the cell during their crackdown on Wednesday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said the police were making a list of all illegal casinos operating in the capital.

“Along with RAB, the police will also take action against those who run illegal casinos, no matter how powerful they are,” he added.

“No such illegal businesses will run in this city,” the commissioner told journalists outside his office yesterday noon.

“Those who go to these casinos to gamble also do drugs. Drug abuse will be controlled once these casinos are closed down. If that does not help, we will take stronger action against drug traders,” he said.

“People are, of course, allowed to entertain themselves. But if they are involved in anything illegal or are doing drugs, we will keep them under surveillance. If necessary, we will even take steps against them,” he asserted.

Responding to a query, the commissioner said: “We take action as soon as we are informed. The deputy commissioners of different zones have been instructed not to tolerate such activities.”
