12,764 women get affected by breast cancer every year

Some 12,764 women across the country are affected by breast cancer every year, which account for about 19 per cent of total female cancer patients here. This was shared at a city press conference yesterday quoting the Globocan-IARC, an interactive web-based platform that deals with cancer statistics globally.

The Bangladesh Breast Cancer Awareness Forum (BBCAF) and a total of 61 Rotary clubs jointly organised the press event at the Dhaka Reporter's Unity (DRU) conference room, where they revealed the latest breast cancer data and shared their month-long plan and awareness campaign meant for Dhaka and outside the capital, marking the ensuing Breast Cancer Awareness Day scheduled on October 10.

Speakers at the programme said awareness of prevention, early detection and screening is necessary to reduce breast cancer-borne premature mortality, which is the leading cause of deaths among the female cancer patients.

Every woman should check her breasts in a prescribed manner every month and if she suspects anything unusual, she should see a doctor right away, they suggested.

Aged women face higher risk of breast cancer.

They should eat healthy foods and exercise on a regular basis as part of breast cancer preventive measures, the speakers said.

Habibullah, Head of Cancer Epidemiology Department of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital, said if breast cancer can be detected early, the patient has better chances of having a normal life. But she has to take follow-up treatment timely and do necessary check-ups.

“In the third stage, a medical test called mammography/mammogram can confirm whether she has breast cancer or not,” he said.

The oncologist, however, said prevention should be the primary objective. Breastfeeding is one thing that both mother and child can be benefitted from, which is why, campaigners will motivate mothers to breastfeed their offspring to protect themselves from cancer.

This year's theme of the ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Day’ is “Breastfeeding reduces risk of breast cancer.”

To raise awareness across the country, a team of physicians from Dhaka will conduct day-long programmes from October 11 in 23 districts under four divisions -- Dhaka, Dinajpur, Rajshahi and Khulna, informed Habibullah, also the chief convener of the BBCAF.
