Argentina-Paraguay match likely Nov 18

Govt asks agent to ensure Messi participation
SPORTS REPORTER, Dhaka
Argentina-Paraguay match likely Nov 18

Argentina’s national football team is likely to play a friendly FIFA match in Dhaka on November 18, after a hiatus of eight years. This time their opponents will be Paraguay.

It will be followed by another FIFA friendly that will take place between Venezuela and Paraguay on November 15 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. But the talk of the sports arena is about the match on November 18 between Argentina and Paraguay as the schedule of the two matches has already been included in the FIFA calendar. Argentina are also scheduled to face Brazil in Saudi Arabia on November 15.

On behalf of the Bangladesh government, the security issue was confirmed to the agent who will organise the matches. However, Bangladesh has also stipulated a condition to the organisers about the inclusion of Lionel Messi in the Argentine team. If everything goes smoothly, Bangladesh football fans will have the opportunity to enjoy two FIFA friendly matches with the participation of two-time World Cup champions Argentina, and two other Latin American football powerhouses Venezuela and Paraguay.

About the two matches, the general secretary of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Abu Nayeem Shohag, told this correspondent yesterday (Tuesday) that they have been working on this for the past few days and now there is a 50–50 chance, as there will be a huge financial commitment in organising the matches.

“A Europe-based agent and a Bangladeshi agent are working to organise the matches and we have already held some meetings with the bodies concerned, both our government and the agents,” said Abu Nayeem. “The discussion is progressing well but there will be further conversations between the government, the BFF and the agents, because it’s a big deal and a massive occasion. Hence, we have to hold many discussions to make it final,” said Abu Nayeem.

Abu Nayeem added: “On behalf of the Argentine team, they wanted fool-proof security and that too from the BFF. The government’s foremost condition is that Messi will have to be included in the squad.”

Abu Nayeem also said the main focus will be on the Argentina–Paraguay match while the match between Venezuela and Paraguay will be less of an attraction.

State minister for youth and sports Zahid Ahsan Russel also talked about the match when he said that the inclusion of Messi in the squad of the Argentine team is their main condition, as the Argentine team is seeking fool-proof security. “The organising agents, who want to stage the match between Argentina and Paraguay in Dhaka, applied for our permission and sent a letter about the confirmation of security for the participating teams.

We gave a positive reply. But we also stipulated the condition that it would be the full Argentine squad and the inclusion of Messi would be mandatory,” said Ahsan.

BBC Sport adds: The Argentinian team is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on November 15, a report from the BBC said on Tuesday. However, the report did not mention whether the Argentine captain Lionel Messi would be playing in the match. A match is scheduled to take place between Argentina and Paraguay on November 18.

A tweet from the Paraguay National Football team mentioned that there would be two matches between Paraguay and Argentina on November 18 and between Paraguay and Venezuela on November 15 during the November FIFA international break.

Earlier, Argentina’s national team—including Messi and D Maria—the full squad—played a FIFA friendly match against Nigeria on September 6 in 2011 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. Argentina had won the match 3–1.
