Remembering Bangabandhu’s speech in United Nations

People from all walks of life are aware of the historic address of Bangabandhu March 7. The speech was essentially a certificate of redemption of a particular territory and the rights of a particular nation.

The birth of a nation, an independent sovereign state, a national flag and a national anthem all came into being by the hand of historical speech of that day. So far, the speech of March 7 was just a valuable document of independence, wealth of the Bengali nation. The speech of the Bangabandhu March 7 was being included on October 30, 2018 in the UNESCO Memorial of the World Register as a part of world heritage across the borders of Bangladesh. It is no longer a single asset of the Bengali nation, but a world asset and valuable document to the world.
There is another historical speech of Bangabandhu. That is the speech given in Bengali in the session of the UN General Assembly on 25 September 1974. The United Nations speech was also one of the greatest speeches in history. Many of us know that Bangabandhu spoke in the United Nations in Bengali. But many do not know what the content of the speech was. The March 7 speech was a struggle for the rights of the Bengali nation, the preparation for the independence movement and the directional address. But Bangabandhu's speech delivered to the United Nations on September 25 was a courageous utterance and courageous step towards establishing equitable rights, world peace and justice for the oppressed, deprived of the rights of the whole world.

Bangabandhu, in his speech, said that after the birth of the United Nations, a quarter-century of experience shows that there has been continuous struggle in the face of enormous obstacles to the implementation of its ideals. Millions of freedom fighters from Asia, Africa, and Latin America had to sacrifice to achieve the promise of self-control that the UN Charter promises. This struggle is still going on. The war is going on unlawfully occupying the area, using force to end the equitable rights of the people and racism. Injustice is still prevalent in many parts of the world. Our Arab brothers are still fighting for the complete abolition of the invaders from their land. The equitable national rights of the Palestinian people have not yet been achieved. Although the process of abolishing colonialism has accelerated, it has not yet reached its ultimate goal. This is more strongly true for Africa, where the people of Zimbabwe and Namibia are still in the final struggle for national independence and liberation. Even though racism has been identified as an extreme crime in this council, the conscience of the people is still eroding it. On the one hand, the struggle to overthrow the stream of injustice, on the other, we have great challenges.

This bold statement against anti-fascism, anti-imperialist Bangabandhu deserves special status in the pages of history. Life is very valuable to people. Every man loves his own life very much. Only Bangabandhu has despised all his life. Wherever he saw the deterioration of humanity, he raised his head, raised his hand to help, and tried to awaken world conscience. Many of the leaders of the Third World who died after liberating their nation took the path of development of true independence by freeing them from the influence of imperialism. Knowingly, Bangabandhu has chosen the path of liberation from exploitation, deprivation, illiteracy and poverty of real independence. Chilean leader and President Allende died in the early seventies in a revolution against imperialism and the exploiting classes as he took the path of such progressive development. They put the hated dictator General Pinochet in power. Knowing that, a conspiracy was underway to arrest Luis Carbalan, another Chilean leader in prison at that time. Bangabandu said, “I love life; But I am not afraid to sacrifice life for the salvation of men.” If not such a brave and lion-hearted man, he would not have stood up in the United Nations to deliver such irritating speeches against fascism and imperialism.

During the twenty-three years of Pakistan rule, Bangabandhu has struggled bravely, ignoring the bloodshed, torture, jail-torture, even death of the ruler. Likewise, he did not fear the bloodshed of fascism, imperialism, the power of the deprived of the rights of the world. In a very forceful voice, he expressed his right to the UN General Assembly. In his speech, Bangabandhu, on the one hand, spoke of establishing the rights of the oppressed people of the world, again he spoke pursuit of hunger, he demanded the minimum guarantee of a happy and respectful life for every human being through economic emancipation, starvation, poverty, elimination of unemployment.

Bangabandhu unequivocally declared on that day that the United Nations must harness the power of logic to create an equitable international system. This system will guarantee the sovereignty of each country over its natural resources. To develop this system, a practical framework of international cooperation is needed, the basis of which will be the recognition of the common interests of all countries of the world in a stable equitable economic system. Now is a time when we have to declare in voice that we have an international responsibility. It is the responsibility of every man of the world to enjoy the economic, social and cultural rights that are suited to the development and dignity of everyone personality. According to the Declaration of Human Rights, we have to fulfill our international responsibilities in such a way that every person is guaranteed to establish the standard of living necessary for the prosperity of himself and his family. If weapons competition is reduced, it will be possible to spend huge resources wasted on the competition for the welfare of mankind. As Bangabandhu points out his heroic role in realizing the helpless poor people of the world, in his speech, he also vowed to build a peaceful world free from the threat of nuclear war. In his speech, he said, “We will not move towards a world filled with hunger, poverty, unemployment, fear of starvation, fear of being completely destroyed by nuclear war, we will look to a world where humanity is capable of great success in the era of astounding advances in science and technology. This future will be free from the threat of nuclear war. By the equitable distribution of all the resources and technical knowledge of the world, the door to such welfare will be opened where every person will have the minimum guarantee of a happy and respectable life.”

The context of March 7 and September 25 is different. The March 7 speech was the key driving force for the independence movement of seven million Bengalis, preparatory guidelines for the war. To this day, no one has ever given such a beautiful, transparent speech in the history of the world. The speech was associated with the hypnotic power of Bangabandhu, the power that attracted people as a magnet. And the March 7 speech for this unique honor is the best speech in the history of the world and Bangabandhu is the greatest Bengali of all time. Bangabandhu’s speech at the UN session on September 25 was, a bold utterance against fascism, as a powerful step in establishing the equitable rights of the deprived of the world’s rights. In the speech given by Bangabandhu, the direction of international economic development was achieved through the establishment of world peace, reduction of nuclear weapons competition, peaceful coexistence, internal interference of any country and sovereignty. Since the establishment of the UN, to this day, no doubt, no politician has been able to deliver such a beautiful, constructive and bold statement against fascism, imperialism. However, no international body has researched Bangabandhu’s speech till date. If appropriate assessment of the speech is done, Bangbandu’s speech in UNO will be selected as one of the best world historic event and masterpieces among all leaders who spoke in UN. We hope UNESCO shall take necessary step for its proper recognition and due declaration as the top most speech in the  UN.
