Online game PUBG banned in country

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Online game PUBG banned in country

Bangladesh yesterday banned PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG), an online multiplayer battle royale game, for its addictive, harmful, and distracting effects on people, including students. Confirming the ban, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Cyber Security and Crime Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) AFM Al Kibria told The Independent that the game was banned because of its negative impact on society and fears that it would make students and teenagers violent.

“We have decided to ban the game officially because of its negative psychosocial and technological impact on people,” he said. According to him, the decision was taken after the Cyber Security and Crime Division asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication

Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to ban the game on receipt of a number of complaints. “Upon our request, they have closed the game in Bangladesh, but a vested quarter is trying to reopen it. So, we have officially banned it in the country,” the DC said.

Along with the PUBG, Call of Duty, Reddit, PUBG Light Game have also been banned.

In the first week of October, many gamers posted on Facebook that they were having difficulties playing the game in Bangladesh and unable to access it using Bangladeshi servers.

Originally, talks on the ban of PUBG in Bangladesh began in April this year. Many people blamed the game for the murder of Muslims at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, and showing the scene on Facebook Live. Nepal’s court banned the PUBG on April 13 this year. For the same reason, the game has also been banned in Gujarat, India. A few people were even arrested for playing the game. In addition, the game has been declared forbidden in a region of Indonesia.

The move follows similar bans in Iraq, Jordan and the Indonesian province of Aceh.
