Omar Faroque removed as Juba League chairman

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Omar Faroque removed as Juba League chairman

Juba League Chairman Omar Faroque Chowdhury was relieved of his responsibilities at the ruling party Awami League’s affiliate youth organisation last night. The decision was made at a meeting with Awami League President Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Emerging from the meeting, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader briefed the journalists about the meeting proceedings and confirmed the removal of Omar Faroque. “Party chief Sheikh Hasina has instructed to remove all those involved with wrongdoings from the organisation,” he said. Among others, the meeting decided to fix 55 as the age limit for affiliation with the youth organisation, Quader said, adding that Chayon Islam was made the convener of the Juba League’s preparatory committee ahead of its council.

The 7th triennial council session of the party is scheduled on November 23 at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sat with the leaders of the ruling party’s affiliate body to give them much-anticipated directives to successfully hold it’s the upcoming council session.  The meeting started at 5:30pm at the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganabhaban, where Omar Faroque Chowdhury and Juba League Presidium Member Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shawon were not invited.

Party insiders said the two leaders were not invited due to their alleged involvement in different irregularities which were revealed after the law enforcers started drives against various irregularities, including casino business operations, on September 18.

Speculation was rife that the Awami League chief would name an acting chairman for the Juba League ahead of the council session, but Quader declined to talk about any such development. In general, the youth organisation’s incumbent chairman is supposed to chair the council session, but this time Juba League Chairman Omar Faroque Chowdhury is not in a position to preside over the session.

Prior to the meeting, senior party leaders like former Juba League Chairman and AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak said to The Independent, “Party chief Sheikh Hasina was to give necessary instruction to the Juba League leaders.” While talking to this correspondent, several Juba League aspirant leaders called upon Sheikh Hasina to drop all corrupt leaders from the organisation and induct dedicated, committed and deprived leaders in the new committee.

Juba League incumbent Publicity and Publication Affairs Secretary Iqbal Mahmud Bablu said that fresh blood should be inducted in the new committee. Those involved in Chhatra League politics and played an important role during the party’s bad times should be inducted in the new committee through the upcoming council session, he viewed.

The first council session of Juba League was held in 1974, where Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was made the chairman of organisation. Moni was the nephew of the founding father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The last council session of the youth body was held in 2012 when Omar Faroque Chowdhury was made the chairman.
