BIWTA officers want colleague accused in case

Officials of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) expressed their anger over the exclusion of Nesar Uddin Khan in the police case for the physical assault of a female engineer of BIWTA. They also demanded exemplary punishment for those who were involved, including additional chief engineer Nesar, in assaulting the female engineer.

Earlier on Thursday, two Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders allegedly assaulted BIWTA’s superintendent engineer Zarina Khanom at the office of BIWTA’s additional chief engineer (marine and mechanical section) Nesar Uddin Khan.

BIWTA has filed a case with Motijheel Police Station, accusing Sagor, president of BCL Motijheel unit, and Rakib, the unit's vice-president, for assaulting Zarina.

Cops from Motijheel Police Station, led by officer-in-charge (OC) Yasir Arafat Khan, visited Nesar’s office and grilled several BIWTA employees about the incident yesterday. “The matter is under investigation. So, inclusion of Nesar's name in the police case depends on the outcome of the investigation,” Kazi Wakil Nawaz, secretary of BIWTA, told this correspondent.

Abdul Awal, the president of BIWTA officers association, said Nesar had failed to protect his colleague.

“It was his (Nesar's) duty to protect Zarina Khanom. Nesar’s role could've been more proactive in protecting Zarina, as

the incident took place in Nesar’s own office room,” he said. Awal said they have requested the higher authorities to take legal action against those involved in assaulting Zarina.

Several BIWTA officials alleged that Nesar had embezzled crores of taka through various projects like installation of floating dock, and purchase, repairing, and construction of pontoons and mechanised boats. Besides, crores of taka had also been embezzled in the supply of diesel to BIWTA’s boats and ships, it was alleged.

Sources also alleged that Nesar earned crores of taka and did business with two companies empanelled with BIWTA. One of these two companies, RR Enterprise, owned by Rakib and Sagor, has been doing business with BIWTA for at least eight years through its various tenders, the sources said. Sources further alleged that Nesar had a stake in RR Enterprise and helped it to win BIWTA’s tender works.

However, Nesar Uddin Khan denied all the allegations that brought against him. “The incident took place inside my chamber all of a sudden. I am not involved with any company. All the allegations are baseless,” Nesar said.

When asked about the embezzlement of crores of taka, he replied, “I have no authority to approve any tender work. I am not involved in any corrupt practices.”

Nesar is also the vice-president of BIWTA officers association and Bangabandhu Parishad.

Some leaders of BIWTA officers association said that Nesar will be expelled from both the officer’s association and Bangabandhu Parishad today. Motijheel police station OC Yasir Arafat Khan said Rakib had been arrested and he was produced before court after completing one-day remand yesterday.

“We are investigating the case. Details will be disclosed after completion of the investigation,” he added.
