Rat infestation in T-Aman plots worries farmers

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Jhenidah
Rat infestation in T-Aman plots worries farmers

At a time when farmers are going to harvest transplanted Aman (T-Aman) from their land, they find themselves helpless in the face of rat attacks. Such attacks threaten to reduce production and cause financial loss to farmers.

The department of agriculture extension (DAE) has started creating awareness by holding seminars with the farmers of Kaliaganj upazila, in Jhenidah, to find ways to save the crops from rats.

The farmers have fulfilled 97.63 per cent of the target for T Aman farming in the upazila.

They brought 18,550 hectares of land under the crop against a target of 19,000 hectares in the current season, DAE sources said.

Farmers told this correspondent that rats were causing a lot of harm to paddy plots in Khayertala, Bakulia, Bhatpara, Raghunathpur, Bakergachhi, Barobazer, Khedapara, Ulla, Shatbaria, Sundarpur, Alaipur and some other villages when the plants were maturing.

Farmers Mansur Ali, MasudRana, Modasser Hossain and some others said the rats were nibbling away at the plants and cutting them. As a result, they were wilting and collapsing on the ground. Rat traps placed in the fields had not helped. The trend would reduce production and cause a financial crisis, they said.

Kabirul Haque Nannu, a ward member of Shatbaria village, said they had not seen such rat attacks before. The farmers in the area have been trying to produce paddy using costly irrigation water drawn by pumps, as there was not enough rainfall during the transplanting period. The rat attack must be stopped at any cost, Kabirul Haque Nannu said.

Upazila agriculture officer (UAO) at KaliganjJahidul Karim said he had heard about the massive rat infestation. The rats population had exploded this season because of inadequate rainfall in this region.

To make the farmers aware and protest their crops, the DAE was holding seminar with the farmers. Further, the farmers were being advised to use approved doses of zinc phosphate in the paddy plots, the UAO said.
