Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of Awami League (AL) chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, does not want to take up any key post in the party, which is set to hold its 21st triennial council session on December 20-21, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said yesterday. “I had asked our party chief to induct Joy into the AL central committee, but she replied that he (Joy) has no interest in taking up any key post in the party right now,” Quader said at a briefing at the party president’s Dhanmondi political office over the preparations for the party’s council session.
“I had also asked our party chief to groom Joy as the next leader of AL.
Joy, also the information and communication technology (ICT) adviser to the PM, became a member of the AL’s Pirganj upazila unit on Monday.
Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said there is no chance to increase the number of AL central working committee members at the national council session. “There is no alternative to Sheikh Hasina in the AL. We need her for the country’s development and in the greater interest of the people,” he said, adding that the PM’s initiatives for the country’s development were highly admired across the globe.
He also urged party MPs against contesting for the posts of president and general secretary in AL upazila councils. “AL
president Sheikh Hasina has already instructed MPs in this regard. They can, however, contest in AL district councils,” he added.
Quader said the forthcoming AL national council will be held in a festive manner and the leaders of all registered political parties, including the BNP, and diplomats will be invited to the event. He added that the councils for the party’s Dhaka South and North units will be held on November 30.
The AL general secretary also said letters will be sent to party district leaders to know whether they have any proposal to amend the AL constitution.
He said the ruling party wants to celebrate Mujib Year in a colourful manner as global leaders will visit Bangladesh on the occasion.
About the BNP’s demand for the release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia, Quader said BNP leaders often say there is no alternative to waging a vigorous movement to free their chairperson, which proves that they have no trust in the judiciary.
AL organising secretary and deputy minister for water resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, AL science and technology affairs secretary Abdus Sabur and central leader SM Kamal Hossain were among those present at the press briefing.
