No initiative taken yet to mediate JU crisis

No initiative has taken yet to mediate the ongoing crisis of Jahangirnagar University (JU) here though already two days of the ultimatum by the demonstrating teachers and students have already elapsed. They issued a 7-day ultimatum on November 13 demanding reopening dormitories and resuming the academic activities of the university.

They also demanded the removal of JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam within this time.

However, the university authorities are waiting for the direction of the government to resolve the crisis, source said. Talking to the JU Proctor ASM Feroz-Ul-Hasan said, “Its’ not possible to resolve the ongoing crisis of the university by issuing any ultimatum. Discussion is the only way to resolve this crisis”.

“They submitted allegations against the Vice-Chancellor to the government. University authorities also give explanations. So, we are waiting for the decision of the government in this regard”, he added. Secretary of the VC-backed teachers’ faction ‘Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad’, Professor Bashir Ahmed said, “Now government is dealing this issue. Government will able to find amicable solution of the ongoing crisis of the university”.

Earlier, on November 9, the protesters submitted a 6-page complaint with 70 pages of documents against the Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam to the education ministry. Meanwhile, the protesters said that they will go for the tougher movement after ending the 7-days ultimatum. They have already called mass gatherings on November 22 demanding the removal of JU VC and the punishment of the BCL attackers who beaten up the protesters on November 5.

Ariful Islam Anik, one of the organizers of the platform ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’ said, “We never postpone our movement. Our movement against the corruption of JU VC is going on. We just gave some time to the university authorities and the government, so that they could find and amicable solution in this regard. We think, only the resignation of the VC can resolve the crisis”.

Meanwhile, the general students expressed deep concern as the academic activities has been remaining suspend. Deluar Hossain of Chemistry department said, “Our academic activities have been totally stopped. Most of our friends and juniors have compelled to leave campus as dorms are closed. Now, we are going to face a long time session backlog”.
