Protest in RU as ‘BCL men’ beat student in hall

Rajshahi University (RU) students blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway on Saturday morning hours after two alleged Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists assaulted a finance department student in a dormitory on the campus. The protesters demanded punishment for the perpetrators and asked the university authorities to take responsibility for the treatment of the victim.

They also demanded the removal of the RU provost and the warden of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, where the incident took place.

The students started their demonstration around 11am in front of Tukitaki Chattor. They then took out a rally across the various roads on the campus and blocked the highway in front of the university’s main gate. This continued till 3.20pm. They later postponed their agitation till 10am on Sunday following assurances from the authorities to look into their demands.

According to RU insiders, Shohrab Mia, a third-year student of the finance department, suffered injuries on his head and hands from the beating. He received 15 stitches and was undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

The sources said Asif Luck of Islamic studies department and Humayun Kabir Nahid of Bangla department had taken Shohrab to Room No. 254 of the hall around 12.30am and beat him for half-an-hour. Both Nahid and Asif are fourth-year students of the university and also followers of Golam Kibria, president of the BCL’s university unit.

Shohrab’s friends took him to the university medical centre, from where he was referred to RMCH. Shohrab said Asif had accused him of stealing his laptop and slapped him three days ago. “Last night, Asif and Nahid took me and some of my friends to that room and locked it. Nahid started beating me with an iron rod. At the same time, Asif struck my head several times with a piece of wood continuously,” he said from his hospital bed on Saturday.

“They beat me indiscriminately all over the body and my head started bleeding. I pleaded with them to leave me, but they threatened to kill me if I shouted. I then lost consciousness and discovered myself in this hospital bed after regaining sense. I want stringent punishment for the two assaulters,” he added.

Shohrab’s friends, who were also taken inside the room, witnessed the torture, but did not dare say anything, said one of the witnesses requesting anonymity.

RU’s BCL president Golam Kibria said, “We have visited the injured student at the hospital. We have also formed a four-member investigation committee and asked it to submit a report within 24 hours. We will take organisational action against the accused, if found guilty.”

Rohul Kuddos, assistant commissioner of Rajshahi police, said, “A case of attempt to murder has been lodged at Motihar police station. The complaint was made against two students and five unknown men. We are trying our best to arrest them as soon as possible.”

RU pro-vice-chancellor Prof. Dr Ananda Kumar Saha said, “I have asked police to take the accused students into custody. We have also initiated the process to suspend them from the university.”
