Nirmal, Afzal named new president, secy

Nirmal Ranjan Guha and Afzalur Rahman Babu were elected the president and general secretary of the Bangladesh Swechchhasebak League (BSL) respectively yesterday (Saturday). The BSL central body and its city unit got the new leadership through its third national council session.

The session was held yesterday (Saturday) amid festivities in the presence of hundreds of leaders and workers at the city’s Suhrawardy Udyan ground.

The BSL, an associate organisation and volunteer wing of the ruling Awami League (AL), started its journey in 1997 through a convening committee led by Mokbul Hossain and Habibur Rahman Habib. The last central council session of the volunteer wing was held in 2012.

The first council session of the organisation was held in 2003, where AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Pankaj Debnath were made president and general secretary respectively of the organisation. However, the council was held in two sessions. The first session was held at Suhrawardy Udyan and the second session was held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the

national council of the organisation. After the second session, the central leaders announced the names of the new leadership of the organisation.

The names of Guha and Rahman were announced as the new president and general secretary respectively for the central body of the organisation. Nirmal Ranjan Guha was the senior vice-president of the outgoing committee while Afzalur Rahman Babu was the vice-president of the previous committee.

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader announced the names of the BSL’s new leadership. He also announced the names of the new presidents and secretaries for the Dhaka North and South units of the Swechchhasebak League.

Former BCL leaders Kamrul Hassan Ripon and Tareq Sayeed were named the new president and secretary respectively for the Dhaka South unit Swechchhasebak League while former BCL leaders Ishaq Miah and Anisur Rahman Nayeem were named the new president and secretary respectively for the Dhaka north unit Swechchhasebak League.

The council session of the Dhaka South unit Swechchhasebak League was held at Suhrawardy Udyan on Monday while the Dhaka North unit council session was held at Krishibid Institution on Tuesday.

During the announcement of the new leadership, AL general secretary said: “Six names were proposed for the president’s post of the central body while 12 names were proposed for the general secretary’s position. As the aspirant candidates failed to reach a consensus on selecting two names for the president and secretary, our organisational chief Sheikh Hasina finalised the two names out of them.”

Quader said: “I hope all leaders and workers of Swechchhasebak League will accept our leader’s decision.” Earlier, in September, the AL central leadership decided to hold council sessions to its four associate bodies after some top leaders of these organisations were allegedly involved in various irregularities, including running a casino business in the capital.

The alleged involvement of Swechchhasebak League incumbent president Mollah Mohammad Abu Kawser in the casino business in the capital was revealed after law enforcers started its drive against corruption and illegal activities on September 18. The organisation’s outgoing committee president Mollah Mohamamd Abu Kausar and its general secretary Pankaj Debnath have been removed from their respective posts just before its national council for their alleged involvement in illicit casinos and other irregularities.
