2nd edition of ‘IDLC Theatre Festival’ begins today

With an aim of celebrating the long heritage of theatre in Bangladesh, Industrial Development Leasing Company of Bangladesh Limited (IDLC) is organising a five-day theatre festival from today on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital.

The inaugural ceremony of the second edition of the ‘IDLC Theatre Festival’ will be held today at 5pm at the National Theatre Hall of BSA. Cultural personality Asaduzzaman Noor, IDLC CEO & MD Arif Khan, prominent playwrights and theatre artistes will be present at the event.

After the inaugural ceremony, eminent dance artiste Rachel Priyanka will perform Gaudiya Nritya, a classical dance of ancient Bengal.

Later, the play ‘Bhoddornok’, an adapted version of Moliere’s The Bourgeois Gentleman, by theatre troupe Natyachakra will be staged at 8:30pm at the same venue. The play is directed by Golam Sarwar.

On the other hand, Theatre and Performance Studies Department of University of Dhaka (DU) will stage its play ‘Roshpuran’, directed by Dr Ahmedul Kabir, today at 6:30pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA, as part of the festival.

During the five-day festival, a total of 10 prominent theatre troupes are scheduled to stage their plays. The participating troupes are—Dhaka University Theatre and Performance Studies Department, Natyachakra, Tarua, Padatik Natya Sangsad, Shobdo Natyacharcha Kendra, Samay Natyadal, Dhaka Theatre, Arshinagar, Jahangirnagar University Drama & Dramatics Department, Theatre, and Nagorik Natya Sampraday.

Every day, two plays will be staged at the two different venues of BSA. The entry fee is 100 taka each, while the entry fee will be donated to the Theatre Federation Welfare Trust for the development of group theatre.
