Canada requests exit permit for Rohingya woman

Canada has requested Dhaka to issue an exit permit for a Rohingya woman so that she can reunite with her husband in their country.

In a letter to the foreign affairs ministry, the Canadian high commission recently said: “We request you to issue an exit permit for Fatema Kanis, a Rohingya woman, who wishes to be reunited with her husband in Canada as quickly as possible.”

“In making this request, Canada recalls the indication of support from the Bangladesh foreign minister, Dr AK Momen, when this matter was discussed during a bilateral meeting with Canada’s foreign minister Chrystia Freeland on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Thailand on August 2, 2019,” the letter added.

“Fatema Kanis will travel using a single-journey travel document,” the letter stated. The letter, however, did not mention how and when Fatema Kanis’s husband went to Canada.

After receiving the letter, Bangladesh foreign ministry officials forwarded the letter to the senior secretary of disaster management and relief ministry, senior secretary of the Public Security Division of the home ministry, secretary of the Security Service Division, inspector general of police, director general of National Security Intelligence (NSI), and the additional inspector general of the Special Branch (SB) of police for taking further steps.

In the letter, Mosammad Meer Nurani Rupama, assistant secretary of foreign ministry, requested the chiefs of the ministries and the agencies concerned to send opinions after inquiring whether Fatema Kanis is involved in criminal activities or not.

Talking to The Independent, a senior official of the Security Service Division of the home ministry said they have already sent a letter to the intelligence agency to investigate the matter. “After receiving positive report, we will inform the foreign ministry with a report on Fatema Kanis, who is now staying at a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar,” he added.

The official said that Fatema Kanis must show proof that her real husband is staying in Canada and that he is a Rohingya.
