2 city corpns owe Tk 158cr to DPDC

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
2 city corpns owe Tk 158cr to DPDC

The two Dhaka city corporations together owe Tk. 158 crore in outstanding electricity bills to the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC).

The DPDC yesterday said that it will disconnect supply to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in January if they fail to clear the dues by December. DPDC officials made the announcement during the third day of the ongoing four-day-long public hearing on the electricity price adjustment proposal at bulk and retail levels at the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh auditorium in the capital.

In the programme, the technical committee of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) recommended that funds accrued from consumer security should be kept in a separate account and the interest from it should be returned to the subscribers. While giving power connection, every subscriber has to give a certain amount of money which the distribution companies regard as their income. But as per rule, this deposit has to be returned to the subscriber once s/he severs the line. But in reality, this does not happen.

At the hearing, it was stated that the deposit funds should be transferred to a separate account along with the profit. It was also stated that the main fund plus the profit need to be kept separately.

Meanwhile, Consumer Association of Bangladesh’s energy adviser Shamsul Alam inquired about the dues owed by the Dhaka corporations to the capital’s power supply office.

In response, DPDC executive director (Operations) ATM Harun ar Rashid said: “DNCC and DSCC owe Tk. 64 crore and

Tk. 94 crore, respectively, to the DPDC, which has sent notices to the two city corporations with a due date. If the payments aren’t made in time, the service will be cut off.” At the public hearing, the BERC said the retail distribution charge of the Power Development Board should be increased by 21 per cent.

The PDB had sought a 24 per cent increase on its current retail distribution charge after placing the proposal of increasing bulk power tariff by 23 per cent to the commission.
