Bangladesh Under-23 national football team began their ongoing XIII SA Games campaign with a huge upset when they went down to Bhutan by a solitary goal yesterday.

Eyeing to play at least in the final, Bangladesh conceded the goal on 66th minute with Bhutan’s star striker Chencho Gyeltshen blasted the all important goal of the match.

Bangladesh, who have a bright chance this time in absence of India and Pakistan, the highest time gold medal winning teams to regain the title of the game’s football they won nine years back in home ground in 2019, suffered eh shocking defeat.

It is the first time that Bangladesh conceded defeat at the hands of Bhutan in the SA Games football while a drew in previous edition in Guwahati, India was the worst result, though Bangladesh had another bitter experience with suffering defeat against Bhutan in the 2016 in the AFC Cup qualifying round match in Thimpu.

Bangladesh will play their second match today against Maldives.

In the remaining proceeding, Bangladesh however tried to stage a fight back creating some scoring chances but failed to convert those into a goal due to lack of proper finishing.

The top two teams will lock horn in the final scheduled to be held on December 10 at t he same venue.

Bangladesh team: Anisur Rahman, Pappu Hossain, Mahfuz Hasan Pritom, Biswanath Ghosh,Rahmat Mia,Yeasin Khan, Tutul Hossain, Riyadul Hasan, Sushanto Tripura, Jamal Bhuyan, Biplob Ahmed, Mohammad Rabiul Hasan, Mohammad Al Amin, Mahbubur Rahman, Saad Uddin, Nabib Newaz Zibon, Rakib Hossain, Arifur Rahman and Mohammad Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, Maldives and Sri Lanka on Sunday expressed their dissatisfaction over the rescheduling of football tournament under the 13th South Asian Games.

Speaking at the pre-tournament press conference, Maldives coach Petr Segrt was more vocal and spat venom on the organisers accusing them of trying to kill the players. “The change in schedule without prior information is not acceptable.

We cannot play matches every other day as we need to protect the rights of the players,” he said.

The All Nepal Football Association changed the schedule after India withdrew from the tournament.

Scrapping the league-cum knockout format among the six participating teams, the ANFA rescheduled the fixtures to round-robin format.
