Students of Stamford University yesterday launched a protest demanding justice for the alleged murder of their fellow Rubaiya Sharmin Rumpa in Siddheshwari area of Dhaka on Wednesday night. The students gathered on the campus in Siddheshwari, demanded a proper investigation into Rumpa’s death. They formed a human chain. Teachers from the university expressed their solidarity as well.

Yesterday morning, while gathered at the Stamford University campus in Siddheswari, the students claimed that Rumpa had been murdered. They added that all classes and examinations should be halted until justice is served. Bini Eamine Siam, a student of Stamford University, told The Independent that the students want justice. “She was not the type to commit suicide. We believe it was a planned murder. We will continue our protest peacefully,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rumpa may have been raped before murder, a forensic doctor said after autopsy yesterday.  The girl’s body was recovered in a lane off Circular Road at Malibagh in the capital.

Sohel Mahmud, head of the Dhaka Medical College forensic medicine department, told reporters that the young woman’s hands, legs, waist, and spinal cord were fractured.

The victim, Rubaiya Sharmin Rumpa, 21, was a second-year student of the English Department at Stamford University. She was the daughter of police inspector Rukan Uddin, said Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramna police station.

The forensic doctor said, “We felt she might have been raped but have not received the full details yet. The body was sent to a forensic specialist for further examination. The forensic details were collected keeping this in mind.”

“We are not sure about the rape aspect, but we are investigating it. There are three high-rise buildings, including a women’s hostel, near the area where her body was found. But no resident could identify her. The evidence has been collected and the case is under investigation,” said the OC.

Police continue the investigation into the death, they have already collected CCTV footage from the area and those are being scrutinized. Rumpa’s father filed a case against unidentified assailants on Thursday.

The victim used to live with her mother and younger brother at the capital’s Shantibag area. Her father is stationed as an in-charge of a police outpost in Habiganj.

Family members identified the body after seeing her images on media reports on Thursday, said the police. Rumpa’s burial rites have been completed in her ancestral home in Habiganj.

According to her uncle, on the night of her death, Rumpa left her home empty-handed. She did not carry her mobile phone and walked out in her house slippers.

But her family members noted that it was mysterious how Rumpa could have gone into the buildings in the area. They suspect Rumpa was murdered by her friends. Rumpa appeared to have died after falling from a building, as locals heard a thud and then found her lying lifeless on the street.
