The Bangladesh national anthem was rendered three times yesterday after three days interval in the XIII SA Games when weightlifters and fencer earned three gold medals in Kathmandu.

Thanks to weightlifters Mabia Akhter Simanta and Ziarul Islam and fencer Fatema Mujib. They won the gold medal in the women’s and men’s weightlifting and in fencing.   

Mabia Akhter won the gold in the women’s 76kg category when Ziarul Islam won in the men’s 96 kg category and Fatema Mujib won gold in the women’s singles Sabre event .

Mabia Akhter Simanta celebrated her successive second gold medal in the SA Games when the ‘golden girl’ earned her first one  after winning  gold in 2016 SA Games in Guwahati, India.

Mabia won the gold in 2016 in the women’s 63 kg category and this time she won the gold in 76 kg and after her gold, Bangladesh athletes just crossed the gold medal tally of previous edition they had won.

Last edition Bangladesh won four gold medals, besides Mabia’s weightlifting, two gold medals came from swimming won by Mahfuza Akhter Shila and one from shooting won by Shakil Ahmed.

But this time Mahfuza did not take part and in swimming (women) only Zunaina could manage a bronze medal when in shooting Shakil yet to get any medal.      

However, after the karate teams won three gold medals following Dipu Chakma won the first gold for the country in Taekwondo, last three days none of the Bangladesh athletes could win any gold but some silver and bronze medals came from different events.

Mabia Akhter Simanta after winning the gold medal in the previous edition had due recognition from government with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gifted her (Mabia) a flat.

Mabia in her reaction after winning the gold said, “The joy knows no bounds of winning the medal because there were so many responsibilities. Early in the morning there were so many tension whether she would be able to keep the honour for the country.”

“Before the game so many people met me, told me ‘we are looking forward to you and expecting something from you’. So, impression is great that I did not disappoint them and could satisfy all. Actually, I can’t explain more what the real feelings.”

Jiarul clinched his gold in the men’s 96kg weight category. It was second gold in weightlifting discipline after Mabia won the first on the same day

 Bangladesh won its sixth gold medal in the 13th South Asian Games through the hands of weightlifters Jiarul Islam in Pokhara, Nepal on Saturday.

Jiarul clinched his gold in the men’s 96kg weight category. Jiarul lifted a total 262 kg including 120kg in snatch and 142kg in clean and jerk. Nepalese weightlifter won silver.

Bangladesh never won two gold medals in a single edition of SA Games before. Md Hamidul Islam won the first gold in the 77kg weight category in 2010 Games in Dhaka after Mabia bagged the second gold in 64kg category in 2016 Games in India.

Apart from three gold medals, Bangladesh also earned one silver in shooting. Shooters won the silver medal in mixed team event in 10 meters air rifle. Abdullah Hel Baki and Syeda Atkia Hassan scored nine points to win silver when Indian shooters Mehuli Ghosh and Vardhan Yash scored 17 to win gold.
