Construction of 3rd terminal begins December 28

12m more passengers to get service annually
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Construction of 3rd terminal begins December 28

The construction work of the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital will begin on December 28 and around more 12 million passengers will get service annually after completion of the terminal, Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Air Vice Marshal Mafidur Rahman said yesterday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to lay the foundation stone of the construction work on the day, he informed the reporters during a discussion with the journalists at the HSIA’s conference room in the capital yesterday.

He said the construction work of the third terminal at HSIA will be started on December 28 and is expected to be ended within four years. After finishing this project, it will be possible to provide services around  more 12 million passengers and in total around 20 million passengers.

“We did not compromise about the quality of construction materials for the third terminal.

Many contractors wanted to manage with substandard materials. But we did not give that opportunity, the third terminal will be world class terminal”, Rahman added.

Rahman also said, “Many countries around the world want to operate flights to Bangladesh. But we cannot give the permission due to the pressure of passengers. As the pressure of passengers at HSIA is increasing gradually, we have planned to sift some of international flights to the Sylhet and Chattogram airport”.

“The process to operate direct flight to the UK has been completed and efforts are underway about the direct flights to the United States of America. A team from USA will arrive next week and will give an assessment. After that a decision will come about this”, he said.

“Following the prime minister’s directive, we also show zero tolerance against any corruption in the sector. We are working to aware employees about corruption, if anyone is found involved in corruption, he will not be speared”, he warned.

About the drone operation, he said, a drone policy has been formulated. Now a person or organization will be allowed to operate drone after taking prior permission from the authorities concerned.  “Initially, two places were selected for the setup of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport. The exact place will be announced later,” he informed.
