Prime Minister’s Information and Communication Technology Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy has instructed the ministry concerned to take necessary steps to appoint administrators at mobile phone operators Grameenphone (GP) and Robi if they fail to pay the amount fixed by the Supreme Court.

The PM adviser gave the directive at a meeting with the Telecom minister and other high official at the secretariat yesterday.

“The PM adviser has instructed us to comply with the court order on the two mobile operators. If they fail to pay the money, we will act as per the law,” Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Mostafa Jabbar told the Independent yesterday after the meeting.

“We were instructed not to sit with the two operators as the decision has been given by the court,” the minister added.

After an audit of the operators books, Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) in 2016 claimed Tk 12,579.95 crore from Grameenphone, the largest mobile operator in the country, and Tk867.23 crore from Robi, the second largest, in taxes and late fees accumulated over several years.

After a legal battle in lower and higher courts, the Supreme Court, on November 24 last year, ordered GP to pay Tk 2,000 crore and Robi Tk 178 crore to the government within three months against the dues. The BTRC said the court order was for an advance payment, while GP said the payment would be deemed an adjustable deposit. The two operators, however, are yet to make any payment against the court order.
