AL promises to stick to code of conduct

Ruling party Awami League (AL) has promised that its leaders, MPs and ministers would not violate electoral code of conduct during the period of campaigning ahead of the ensuing Dhaka North and South City Corporation elections slated for January 30. Addressing a press conference at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office yesterday, the party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader said the ruling party leaders and activists would conduct election campaigning in favour of their respective candidates abiding by the electoral code of conduct.

“Our party president has already instructed the party lawmakers and ministers not to violate electoral code of conduct during the polls campaign for the sake of holding a free, fair and credible election,” he noted. Replying to a question about the formation of AL election steering committee for city polls, headed by its two senior lawmakers—Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, Quader said, “We can always form such bodies but they (Amu, Tofail) are not joining election campaigning with the party-nominated candidates.”

Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda clarified during a press briefing at his office in the capital on Saturday that no incumbent lawmakers were allowed to attach himself/herself ‘directly’ to the election process of mayoral candidates.

Electoral code of conduct stipulates that the government officials and employees as well as individuals, who enjoy government facilities, cannot campaign in favour of any candidate.

Replying to another question Quader said the party’s two mayoral candidates ‘having clean-image’ – Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam – were enough to conduct election campaign and face the BNP candidates in the upcoming city polls.

Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir

is spreading confusing information about the AL’s election campaign. While talking about other issues, he

said 45 lakh winter clothes and Taka 3 crore have so far been distributed among the cold-hit people in different areas across the country.

AL Joint General Secretary and Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud led a team of the party to distribute winter clothes among the cold-hit people in different areas of Chattogram.

Several other teams of the AL also distributed warm clothes in the northern districts.

About Fakhrul’s comment that the AL government cannot win hearts of the people by observing ‘Mujib Year’, the AL general secretary said, “If it is not possible for us to win hearts, then will it be possible (for BNP) to win hearts by celebrating fake birthday (of Khaleda Zia)?”

Quader said councils of 29 organisational districts of the party took place before the national council of the AL following the instruction of party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who asked to hold councils of the districts by March 6 next.

The AL general secretary also said the new central working committee and advisory council of the AL will pay homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his mausoleum at Tungipara in Gopalganj on January 18.

A joint meeting of the AL central committee and advisory council will be held at Tungipara as per the party’s tradition.

AL Joint General Secretaries Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Organising Secretaries Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Mirza Azam, Advocate Afjal Hossain, SM Kamal Hossain and Sakhawat Hossain Shafiq, Publicity and Publication Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, Agriculture Affairs Secretary Faridunnahar Laily, Science and Technology Affairs Secretary Engineer Abdus Sabur, Information and Research Secretary Dr Selim Mahmud, Women Affairs Secretary Meher Afroz Chumki, Legal Affairs Secretary Kazi Najibullah Hiru and Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan were present on the occasion, among others.
