‘No import of onion from India for now’

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
‘No import of onion from India for now’

The government yesterday cleared its stance on India’s request to import their surplus stock of onion saying that Bangladesh currently has no intention to import the spice from India. “We have no intention to purchase onion from India right now,” Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said this yesterday while talking to reporters at his secretariat office in the capital.

He said the country has already imported huge quantity of onion from other countries following a ban in India on onion export. Besides, he said that local onion is currently being harvested and thus the country does not need further import of the bulb. The minister however said that if the government receives any formal request from India then it might think about resuming imports of onion from the neighbouring country.

India reportedly fell in trouble with its huge stock of onion imported from foreign countries to meet its local demand. But as per reports there is no demand of imported onion in their domestic market due to its substandard quality.

Media reports say India imported about 18,000 tones of onion from different countries but the states are not interested to purchase those. Thus, the imported onion is being stockpiled at Mumbai port and the Indian

government is currently trying to export the lot to Bangladesh to avoided losses.

Sources said the Indian government has already requested the Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi to import onion from the country.

It may be mentioned that Bangladesh faced huge shortage of onion late last year after India, the main source of onion import for Bangladesh, suddenly imposed a ban on exporting onion to meet its domestic market demands.

Bangladesh immediately started importing onion from alternative sources including Turkey, Myanmar and Egypt.
