US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller yesterday said the US will deploy an election observer team to the Dhaka city polls to observe the democratic process in the country.

Miller told this to reporters after a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda at the Election Commission secretariat in the capital.

US hopes that the elections would be peaceful, free, fair and credible, the US ambassador said.

Terming the election as an important process, Miller also urged all to participate in the elections, despite the polls sometimes becoming ‘imperfect’ and ‘noisy’.

“We will have our observers in the elections as we had in the last elections. The eligible candidates would be elected to lead the city corporations.

Our observers want to know how the democratic process is going forward,” Miller said.

About the overall process of the elections, he said, “We are hopeful the elections would be peaceful, free and credible. Everybody wants to take part in the elections. We hope the elections would be participatory.”

Urging all to take part in the elections, he said, “Please, join the elections. Sometimes the election process becomes imperfect and noisy but it is very important.”

Miller also observed the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the technology to be used in the Dhaka city polls scheduled on February 1.

Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing of the Election Commission (EC) Brig Gen Saidul Islam showed to Miller how the EVMs are used for casting votes.

When asked about the purpose of the meeting with the CEC, Miller said, “We came here to talk about the Dhaka City elections. We wanted to see the EVMs. We have seen the process of casting votes through EVMs. They have explained the electronic voting process using EVMs. The important thing is that the voters will choose whomever they want to vote.”

About the voters’ turnout in the elections, he said, “The voters’ turnout in Bangladesh is much higher than the United States. It’s a matter of pride.”

About the participation of the political parties it city elections, the US envoy said, “It’s encouraging to hear that people of both sides of political spectrum are looking at each other. They are the worthy rivals, I suppose. Whoever wins will be the future and potential leaders of the city of Dhaka.”
