The curtain is set to rise on the ‘Jatiya Natya Utsab 2020’ (National Theatre Festival 2020) today. With the theme ‘Jongibaad- Obokkhoy-Durniti, Manbey Na E Sangskiti’ (This culture will not obey militancy, decadence and corruption), the 18-day festival will take place simultaneously in all 64 districts.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the festival today at 11:30am through a video conference from her official residence Gono Bhaban in the capital.

Organised by Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF), the theatre festival is patronised by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and supported by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).

This year, more than 400 theatre troupes around the country are participating with their plays in the festival.

Just ahead of the festival today, a press conference was held yesterday at the Seminar Hall of BSA in Segun Bagicha. BSA Director General and BGTF Chairman Liaquat Ali Lucky, BGTF Secretary General Kamal Bayezid and BSA Secretary Badrul Alam Bhuiyan, among others, were present at the press meet.

Liaquat Ali Lucky said in his speech, “Aiming to contribute in the country’s development through cultural activities, both BSA and BGTF have promised to organise such an event like ‘National Theatre Festival 2020’ in a grand scale. Our honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given her consent to inaugurate the festival. We wish the festival a grand success.”

However, as part of the festival’s inaugural ceremony, different divisional cities such as Dhaka, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Rangpur and Chattogram will host an array of performances.

In the capital, a speech choreography titled ‘Bangabandhur 7 March-er Bhashon’ (7th March speech of Bangabandhu) by Chintok Theatre (Gaibandha) will be staged at the National Theatre Auditorium of BSA in Segun Bagicha.

The festival will bring two prominent plays to the stage on the opening day. Dhaka Theatre will stage a show of its 47th production ‘Putra’ this evening at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall, while Natyachakra will bring its mono-drama titled ‘Eka Ek Nari’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA at the same time.
