BNP to take part in by-elections, CCC polls

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD, Dhaka
BNP to take part in by-elections, CCC polls

The BNP will take part in the forthcoming Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) elections and the by-elections to three parliamentary constituencies, according to party leaders. The party has already taken part in a by-poll to a Chattogram parliamentary constituency and the Dhaka civic polls.

In line with the decision, the BNP will take part in the CCC polls, which is likely to be held in late March. It will also contest the by-elections to Gaibandha-3, Bagerhat-4, and Dhaka-10 constituencies on March 21.

BNP leaders have made it clear that the party's policymakers do not want to leave any election irrespective of the results. Preferring anonymity, a senior leader has said the party high command is looking for young and energetic candidates for the CCC mayoral post and three parliamentary

seats. Party higher-ups feel that taking part in the elections will enable the party to receive public sympathy and expose 'the misrule of the current government'.

BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the decision to take part in the elections was taken long ago and accordingly the party had taken part in one by-election in Chattogram and the Dhaka civic polls. “I don’t know if the party has changed its previous decision,” he said.

Regarding the selection of candidates, Hossain said the party would choose potential candidates on time.

Echoing Dr Mosharraf, another standing committee member, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, said they were yet to sit together to discuss the prospective candidates for the three parliamentary by-elections.

A source said the party was likely to pick city president Dr Sahadat Hossain as the mayoral candidate for the Chattogram civic polls.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission on Thursday announced that the by-elections to Gaibandha-3, Bagerhat-4 and Dhaka-10 parliamentary constituencies would be held on March 21.

The deadline for submission of the nomination paper is February 19. The papers will be verified on February 23 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 29.

The Gaibandha-3 constituency fell vacant following the death of Awami League MP M Yunus Ali Sarker on December 27 last year.

The Bagerhat-4 constituency fell vacant after the death of Awami League MP Mozammel Hossain on January 10. The lawmaker of Dhaka-10, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, resigned on December 29 last year to contest the Dhaka South City Corporation election.
