World Cup triumphant Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team returned home from South Africa yesterday after winning the long-cherished ICC U-19 World Cup crown for the first time in Bangladesh cricket history. State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon greeted the victorious Young Tigers with the garlands after their arrival at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital.

The high-ups of the Youth and Sports Ministry and BCB were also present on the occasion while a huge number of people thronged the premises of the airport and out of the airport to have a glimpse of the victorious players.

Having landed a few minutes after the scheduled time, the newly-emerged world cup champions, led by Akbar Ali, were accorded a small reception at the lounge of the airport. There was a cake cut to memorialize the auspicious occasion of the young heroes homecoming after an epoch-making history in Bangladesh cricket folklore. The sweetmeats were also distributed among the players.

The youth team boarded a flight of Emirates Airlines from Johannesburg at 10:00pm (South Africa Standard Time-SAST) and landed in Dhaka via Dubai following a few hours transit. After being accorded the heroes with a warm reception at the airport, they were taken to the BCB headquarters by a special ‘Champions Bus.’ BCB president boarded the bus with the players at the Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium, where a huge number of people clustered around the premises of the stadium.

A good number of police along with BCB-recruited security personnel were deployed in the stadium and its surrounding areas. They were toiling hard to tackle the crowd of spectators. Later, they did not allow many of the people to enter the stadium, where another cake was cut to commemorate the heroes’ advent at the home of cricket. BCB president and board directors held a meeting with the winning team’s players upon their arrival at Mirpur. Henceforth, the president Nazmul Hassan and captain Akbar Ali raised up the trophy when colourful confetti were pouring down on them. The entire stadium was outburst with ear-splitting fireworks.

Since then, BCB president along with some of board directors, skipper Akbar Ali and head coach Naveed Nawaz attended the scheduled press meet, where the board president announced that they will open a new wing of Under-21to flourish them and make them eligible for the future Bangladesh team. The president also announced they will contract with them under which they will get Tk one lakh per month for the next two years.

“Winning the World Cup is very tough. But defending it or developing further is even more difficult. They have to face some challenges to reach this place but it is very much challenging to reach the next phase. They have to face off those challenges. Overcoming those challenges, we have to move forward further,” said Nazmul Hassan.

“What we have told them having no cause of worrying for the financial or other things. They should concentrate only on their games. We have fixed that there is no team or wing after the stage of U-19. Some players could have gone into the High Performance (HP) unit. And the bulk of the players would get lost,” Papon told the media at the press conference. Papon warned that they will renew the contract with them but if they see any deviation inside any player or players, they will not renew the contract with that player or players.

“It’ll be a two-year contract. It’ll be renewed after two years. If we see they are improving we’ll renew our contract. And if we see any deviation in any player or he does not improve, we’ll not renew the contract,” he warned.

“We’ve fixed from the board that they’ll get Tk one lakh per month for the next two years. We’ll give them every facility that is needed for their development. The fund is unlimited in this case. We want them to be mature within the period that will groom them up so that they can step into the national team. During the gap of their training, we’ll arrange games for them. We’ll arrange tours for them at home and abroad,” he added.

When asked about the government reception for the World Cup winning players, Papon said, “Prime minister will accord a grand reception to them next week at Suhrawardy Udyan. The likely date was Friday, the day after tomorrow but we have been told to delay the date for a week. We don’t know the exact date for the reception yet. We’ll know the date by tomorrow.”

Akbar thanked the BCB and its president, saying that they inspired the wholehearted support from the board and set only a goal to win the World Cup trophy.

“We didn’t play to get anything from the board. We played for the country. But what board has announced will surely inspire us in future. We’re really happy about the supporters who have been supporting us as always,” Akbar told the media.

About captain, head coach Naveed Nawaz said, “Akbar is the least talked player up to the World Cup final. If you look at the service that he has done within the last two years it is unbelievable.”

Khaled Mahmud, game development chairman and the man known to be the architect behind this success, was received by the BCB game development officials with flowers.

The BCB game development was buzzing with crowded people that remained largely avoided in the BCB premises on normal day.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Jahid Hasan Russell spoke to the media after ending the formalities.

“You know all that our honorable PM Sheikh Hasina decided to give them reception on Friday but it will be given by next Friday, precisely before February21 as they have come from a long air journey after a long lull,” Jahid Hasan Russell said.

World Cup winning Captain Akbar Ali, pacer Shoriful Islam and Md Shain Alam would be traveling to their hometown Saidpur by plane while Parvez Hossain and Shahadat Hossain will depart for Chattogram by air.

The other players who will board plane are Mohammad Hasan Morad to Cox’s Bazar, Tanzim Hasan Sakib to Sylhet, Avishek Das to Jashore and Meherob Hasan is destined for Rajshahi.

Tamim and Hridoy will go to Bogura while Md Shamim Hossain and Mahmudul Hasan Joy will go to Chandpur.

The government will also accord a grand reception to the triumphant junior Tigers.
