Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said release of imprisoned BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is possible on parole, but valid reasons need to be presented for granting the plea.

“There is a rule to free a convicted prisoner (Khaleda Zia) from jail if he/she seeks parole providing valid reasons,” said Quader while speaking at a joint meeting with leaders of Khulna divisional units of AL at the party’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in thecity.

“As neither BNP nor Khaleda’s family members have filed any petition seeking her release on parole yet, there is no question of considering Khaleda’s release issue,” he added.

Regarding the issue of the BNP chairperson’s bail, Quader said it is the jurisdiction of the court to grant her bail.

Neither the present government lodged the case against Khaleda Zia nor it has the jurisdiction to grant her bail, the minister said, adding that the case was filed against Khaleda Zia during the period of last caretaker government.

The AL general secretary also alleged that BNP wants to create new political issues over the illness of Khaleda Zia.

“BNP wants to do politics over Khaleda’s illness instead of getting concerned about her physical condition,” he said, adding that the picture of Khaleda Zia’s health condition portrayed by her party leaders do not match with the observations made by physicians of the medical board.

Quader also criticised BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and said he (Fakhrul) could be an experienced politician but the fact is that he is not a physician. So, how would he give decision about the treatment of Begum Zia, Quader asked.

Asked about his telephonic conversation with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul, Quader said Mirza Fakhrul requested him to talk to the Prime Minister about Khaleda Zia’s release. “If now he (Fakhrul) wants to deny the conversation, there are enough evidences to prove his conservation including the recorded version of the call with me,” the AL general secretary said.

The 73-year old former prime minister, Khaleda Zia was sent to jail on February 8, 2018. She is currently undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). On April 1 last year, Khaleda was shifted to BSMMU from the Old Dhaka Central Jail with severe pain in the joints of her hands and legs, insomnia, weakness and high sugar.

Regarding the celebration of Mujib Year, the minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina posted a note of warning that no incident of extortion or excessiveness centering the celebration will be tolerated.

“We will have to hold all programmes marking Mujib Year in a disciplined way,” he added.

AL Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, who was given the charge of Khulna division, chaired the meeting which was moderated by BM Mozammel Haque, who is in charge of Khulna division.

AL Organising Secretary Mirza Azam, Cultural Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua and Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan were present on the occasion.
