AL to invite BNP

PM Hasina’s development work to be highlighted
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
AL to invite BNP

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said that the ruling party will invite its arch rival BNP to attend the Mujib Year Celebration programme on March 17 at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born in Tungipara of Gopalganj on March 17, 1920. He spearheaded the Bengalis’ struggle for liberation, following which Bangladesh emerged as an independent country from Pakistan in 1971.

The birth centenary celebrations, officially termed “Mujib Borsho” or the Mujib Year, will formally start on Bangabandhu’s birthday, which is March 17, and it will continue till March 26, 2021, marking the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s Independence Day. “We have taken elaborate programmes to celebrate the Mujib Borsho. Bangabandhu is not only for the Awami League. He is for all and that’s why, we will invite BNP to the celebration programme. It’s up to them whether they will attend the

programme or not,” Quader said. He was speaking to the media after holding a joint meeting with the party’s lawmakers and presidents and secretaries of the city unit AL leaders at the AL President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in the city yesterday.

The AL general secretary said the main theme of the celebration programme will be — projecting before the world Bangladesh’s birth history, contribution of Bangabandhu and development by the Sheikh Hasina government.

However, the party has already held a series of meetings on how to make the celebration a grand success. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, too, has held a series of meeting with her party’s central leaders at her official residence Ganabhaban.

To celebrate the Mujib Year, the AL and its government have chalked out some 294 programmes, which will be observed at home and abroad, sources in the party said.

To commemorate the birth centenary, the Mujib Year countdown has already been started with fireworks on January 10, the homecoming day of Bangabandhu.

The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Birth Centenary Celebration National Implementation Committee and the National Committee to Celebrate Birth Centenary were formed on February 14 last year.
