Tk 200 notes in March to mark ‘Mujib Year’

Bangladesh Bank will issue regular currency notes and commemorative notes of Taka 200 in March marking the birth centenary celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Besides, the central bank will issue Taka 100 denomination commemorative gold and silver coins marking the birth centenary celebration of Bangabandhu.

Talking to BSS today, Sirajul Islam, Executive Director and spokesman of Bangladesh Bank said, “Taka 200 notes will be issued in the market like the other currency notes of Taka 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and Taka 1,000. The regular and commemorative currency notes of Taka 200 will be issued in this March, but from the next year, the regular currency notes will remain.”

He said that the central bank has taken this initiative to make the birth centenary celebration of Bangabandhu memorable.

Sirajul informed that “Mujibborsho Upolokkhe Bishesh Note” will be written on the body of the taka 200 note, but these will not remain written on the Taka 200 notes which would be issued in 2021.

The central bank spokesperson said the Bangladesh Bank will release some 1050 gold coins denomination of Taka 100 as well as some 5,000 silver coins denomination of Taka 100.

At present, there are regular currency notes of Tk 1, Tk 2, Tk 5, Tk 10, Tk 20, Tk 50, Tk 100, Tk 500 and Tk 1,000 available in the market, which were released on different occasions in the past and their designs changed for several times.

Earlier, Bangladesh Bank released some six types of commemorative notes to make the special events memorable and the Taka 200 note will be the latest version. Besides, some 12 types of commemorative coins were also released in the past.

Earlier,Bangladesh Bank introduced a Taka-40 note to commemorate the “40th Victory Anniversary of Bangladesh” in 2011.

The Taka-40 commemorative note featured a portrait of the Father of the Nation and the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar in the front, and six armed men on the back.

On July 8, 2013, Bangladesh Bank issued Tk 100 note to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bangladesh National Museum.
