Mominul Haque answered his critics with a scintillating century on the third day of the solitary Test against visiting Zimbabwe at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur yesterday.

Mominul's innings of 132 is the first hundred scored by a Bangladeshi batsman in the last six Tests. Even Mominul had scored no century in his last 14 Test innings.

His last century had come against West Indies in Chattogram in 2018.

The top-order batsman said at the pre-Test press conference that they would break the drought of big innings in this Test. He kept his words and smacked a brilliant hundred alongside Mushfiqur Rahim’s jaw-dropping double hundred.

Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque made a precautious start with his overnight partner Mushfiqur Rahim. But they gradually came out of their shells and started mauling Zimbabwean bowlers.

Coming into eighth over, Bangladesh took the lead, moving ahead of Zimbabwe’s first innings score of 265 through the newly-charged captain when Mominul tapped Donald Tinipano’s short delivery through point and gave them two runs due to some tag-team fielding on the boundary. Both Mominul and Mushfiq were then heading for their respective milestones.

Mushfiq leaned back and guided Nyauchi’s wide length delivery through the gap between slip and gully for four to cross his half-century and brought up a century stand between these two.

Mominul drove Donald Tiripano for a boundary to score his ninth hundred in Tests. The century was his first as national team captain. By scoring his hundred, Mominul wrote his name beside Tamim Iqbal in terms of the number of centuries in Tests. But Mominul has played 20 Tests less than Tamim for his nine tons.

Tamim played 60 Tests to make his nine centuries, while Mominul has played 40 Tests to register his nine hundreds.

Resuming the day at three at 79, Mominul took 156 balls to complete his hundred. He smacked 132 off 234 balls, laced with 14 boundaries. It is surprising that Mominul struck all the nine centuries on home soil.

Mominul's highest Test score was 181 that he whipped against New Zealand in Chattogram in 2013. He did it in his third Test (sixth innings) in the year of his Test debut.
