Two new coronavirus-infected patients have been confirmed in the country, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 10. The two new patients are male—one an expatriate who returned recently, while the other contacted the virus from a returnee.

Prof. Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), provided the information at a media briefing at the institute’s Mohakhali office in the capital yesterday.

Two foreign nationals—one from the US and another from the Ivory Coast—who arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) were sent back to their respective countries as they did not have visas. This was in line with the government’s decision to cancel all on-arrival visas till March 31.

“We sent them back on a flight of the same airline,” said HSIA director Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul-Ahsan.

The IEDCR announced that 150 ICU beds in hospitals across the country are now ready for patients infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19). Till yesterday, IEDCR received 4,205 calls to its hotline numbers. Of them, 4,164 were coronavirus related.

Dr Meerjady said: “People with coronavirus infection should not come to the IEDCR office. Please call us. We will collect samples from your home.”

She advised factory owners and authorities to bar from working any employee who has coronavirus-like symptoms. “Give them leave with payment so that they are not worried,” she urged.

She also warned people not to hold social programmes during the crisis period.

At present, 16 people have been placed in isolation and 43

are in institutional quarantine, the IEDCR director revealed.   Returnees from abroad, people with illnesses urged not to visit mosques  Islamic Foundation, in a press release, asked expatriates who returned recently from foreign countries, people with symptoms of COVID-19, and others with cough, cold, and fever to refrain from visiting mosques.

409 Hajj pilgrims return home on special flight  A special flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG-236) carrying 409 Bangladeshis, who had travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, landed at HSIA at around 4:30pm.  The travellers were stranded in Saudi Arabia after the country ceased air communication with Bangladesh as part of the Saudi government’s decision to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Airport Health Camp in-charge Dr Shahriar Sajjad said that doctors were conducting health screening of the returnees. “If the passengers do not have any health complications, they will be allowed to return home on the condition of self-quarantine for 14 days,” he added.  All Qawmi madrasas now closed
