Political parties shun street programmes

Political parties shun street programmes

In view of the coronavirus outbreak, country’s political parties have decided to roll out their revised plan to stand beside the people instead of taking to street for programmes like rallies, human chains and processions. Leaders of both the ruling Awami League and the opposition BNP said they have asked their party rank and file to stay beside the people for creating awareness among them about the deadly disease. Awami League Presidium Member Dr Abdur Razzak said they have asked the party leaders and activists to distribute leaflets among the people to create awareness and stay beside them.

Since the coronavirus has taken a severe turn, he said, his party has decided not to hold any public meeting or gathering. “I think, none should take any programme like public gathering for the greater interest of the people’s safety,” he said. The AL leader also urged other political parties to refrain from taking to street programmes like rally and public gathering and stay beside the people. BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said his party was the first to start distributing leaflets among people to create awareness among them about the disease.

“We have been distributing leaflets among people in different places. We have also asked our party leaders and activists to stay beside the people to help address the situation,” he said. The former minister said supply of sufficient test kits should be ensured to deal with the deadly disease. He said the party has advised its leaders and activists to wash hands often, avoid public gatherings and not to handshake with others as part of safety measure.

Replying to a question, he said they are doing their tasks while the government should take their own course of action to deal with the situation. Jatiya Party Presidium Member Kazi Firoz Rashid said creating awareness among people should be a priority to check coronavirus spread. He also suggested the people not to move unnecessarily and avoid using public transport as much as possible.

The JP leader further said the Election Commission should have reviewed the by-election to Dhaka-10 constituency slated for March 21 in the wake of coronavirus spread. The virus, first detected in China, has infected more than two lakh people globally and caused over 8,000 deaths. Meanwhile, Bangladesh yesterday reported its first death from the novel coronavirus while 14 patients have so far got infected with the deadly virus across the country.
